First check your fuses. (If the temp light does not come on when the engine is hot proceed with the following) Get your engine warm, when the radiator is hot to touch remove the wire from the thermo sensor and ground it, if the fan comes on its the thermo sensor (in the crank case on the left side on most) Some models have a relay under the seat by the battery that Ive seen go bad. Ive never seen or heard of a thermostat goin bad but they are supposed to be like .2 - 0 ohms at 65 degrees F on a 06; located near the handlebars under the fenders, looks like red gel rapped in plastic.

some models use a thermo switch in the head for the temp light and a thermo switch in the crank case which controls the fan.
