That is one nice helmet I believe Muckboy has one. HJC makes a cheapo version that looks pretty nice for around $150 I'm sure others do too.

I actually own that helmet. It is the HJC SPX series, Flat Black. Shoei helmets are awesome, but you would be happy with this helmet. It may be cheaper, but I would definitely not call it cheap. Fantastic ventilation, adjustable pads, and the opening is large. Much less limitation of view and peripheral than my old Fox helmet. All in all I would recommend this to anyone. I paid $160.00 at my stealership for mine. You could probably get one for better than that with a little digging.

Here is a pic of mine.

I haven't had a Shoei off road helmet, but I can tell you that Shoei street helmets are well worth the cost. The quality, fit, ventilation, and comfort are way better than the helmets that are half the price. My Shoei performed excellent during a high speed get off at a local race track recently. I won't wear anything else on the street or track.
A good lower cost helmet (not a cheap one) will probably save your noggin just the same, but you spend 99.99% of the time just wearing it, not crashing it. Try to find the one you're looking for at a dealer and try it on. You'll see and feel the difference vs. the cheaper models.

I tried on every helmet at several stores, including Shoei's, and the HJC SPX (I have a white/silver one) just flat fit my head much better than any other. I agree with milo, you will were your helmet A LOT and you need to get one that not only fits well for safety sake but also for the sake of your comfort. Like I said, I looked at a bunch of helmets and it's not hard to tell which ones are junk if you look closely. Beyond that, make sure it's DOT and Snell approved.
BTW, If you like the Shoei and it fits you well, Dennis Kirk has the VFX-W on closeout for $371 (there may be cheaper places, I just ran across this).

Yeah, I've been asked why I bought a $450 helmet for the street & track when they bought theirs for $50 at Wal-Mart, as if I'm the stupid one.

I just advise everyone to buy the best helmet they can afford.

that's one thing you'll notice with the high end helmets also is the lighter weight. definitely an advantage when riding for long periods of time or riding aggressively.

I have the vfx-w in solid black. I have 3-4 pictures of it in my garage.
I put the quick strap goggle thingie oon my helmet as well....GREAT combo.

I researched for about 3 weeks before I chose this one. I figure that my brain is the most important thing on me and no amount of $$$ should be spared to protect it.

THis helmet is without a doubt, the best one I have ever warn. I have had many $70 helmets and a few $170 helmets....

THe function and fit and weight are great, the looks get it a secong look from other riders as well. I needed to get a XL when I have always warn L...so...be warned, they run a bit small.

I looked at the dealerships, but I really looked and looked on the internet. Dennis Kirk has the best prices and that's where I got the Shoei. Don't waste your time looking elsewhere. After about 15 different helments, I kept going back to this one...and it made the final cut.

Good Luck!
