Viper winch freespool knob

Like most people my freespool knob on my viper winch has gotten stuck. I've cracked open the winch and have it apart but I'm stuck on trying to figure out how to remove the freespool knob. I see what looks like a lock washer on the inside and I'm not sure how to remove it or if I just need to pry the knob off? Aside from that... What is the best way to clean all of the gears and internal parts? Soak it in dish soap or brake cleaner?

Thanks!

nevermind... I was able to work the lock washer out enough to punch the knob out. Still need to know the best way to clean the inner workings though...

I used a parts washer. That grease, mud, sand, water mix was a huge pain in the rear. I would wipe all you could off with rags and if no parts washer is available, I would get a couple cans of brake cleaner and go to town. I would then repack with marine grease.

i used prolly a 1/4 tub of marine grease, maybe more when i repacked mine, i made sure to pack it in the sun gears, and the plates and nooks and crannys that would allow water in. Months later and it still works like a champ, i also used a file to smooth down the ramp that the freespool star thingy rides on, there was a lip keeping it from operating smoothly, works like a champ now.

I rebuild mine about every 6 months, and use BelRay waterproof grease. I use enough to pack all areas so less mud and water can get in. When cleaning I use dirt bike cleaner after I have wiped all I can out with paper towels, let it dry overnight then slather the grease...........

I got it done but had a hard time getting the lock ring back on the freespool knob... I used about half a tube of marine grease and am happy that my knob is back to factory specs. I may file down the knobs next time I have it apart... Thanks for all the tips and advice!
