Homemade winch stopper

So I got fed up with the clamp on the end of the cable getting stuck in the rollers so saw that some had used a hockey puck with a hole drilled in the centre as their winch stopper. Only problem is I have the side rollers and the puck was a bit too wide. I bought two pucks and cut them to size using my table saw. I then drilled the appropriate size holes for the cable and the wider clamp part at the end. I then used two screws to hold the pucks together. Total cost was 2 pucks x 99 cents each.

I finished cutting the pucks yesterday, the day after getting back from emergency. Oh, didn't I tell you?? Seems the pucks are round and the edges have ridges to give it traction so when you try to push the puck between a moving saw blade and a saw fence, well the puck spins and next your finger is in the blade. I lost about 1/6th. of the width of the side of my finger and finger nail from the top of the finger to the bottom of the finger nail but the doctor says it will heal in a couple months. I got lucky. Step 2 after lesson learned, I screwed the puck onto the large board and kept my fingers away. I rotated the pucks a bit at a time until all sides were even. The inner puck has a slight bevel to it. The outer puck was shaved but has no bevel.

First rule when playing in the shop: Never put your finger where you wouldn't put your pecker!

However that's a great idea with the pucks! Thanks for sharing...

FYI another good cheap alternative for a winch stopper is a rubber trailer bump stop from Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas. They already have holes in the center and cost about $3 or $4....

X2 one boat roller will make two stops, it's rubber and can be cut with a NON POWER saw!

I actually went out to buy the bow roller kstateskier, but they were out of them so I remembered the puck idea and they had them. The bow rollers are about $7.00 up here and are an excellent alternative. I still would have had to cut it but it is much easier to do. Good news is it only took about fifteen minutes to cut the pucks, take off the winch cable and slip the pucks on and rewind the cable.....of course, I am not including hospital time.
And in response to your comment cleftwynd...oh...never mind. I had a smart ass reply but this is a family site...

I just paid the 8 dollars from the local dealer for a Moose Stopper. For 8 dollars it didn't seem worth the hassle to try and make one cheaper.
