2004-07 Reverse light wiring

Well i finally finished up wiring in the reverse light on my '06 660. Only took me about a month to figure it out.
I ended up using a SPDT relay (do not use a normal 4 post relay, it won't work.you must use the 5 post SPDT one).
wired it in as follows.........posts 30 & 85 are battery 12v constant power. 87 is accessory (light) power. 86 comes off the CDI box on the quad. (green wire with black dash).
Light only comes on while in reverse.
I'll post pics soon, all my batteries are dead for the camera. :(
I hope this post helps some people.

Todd

Would the wiring be the same for an 09 Grizzly 550fi ? I have a Piaa halogen on order for a backup light.. it comes with a wiring harness with relay built in but I may not use their harness since it will have an on/off switch tethered to it.. I'd rather it be automated as yours is.
thanks

If you have the Clymar service manual, just look at the electrical schematic and find the reverse light wire off the instr. cluster. trace that back to the CDI box. I'm not sure what color your wire would be. find the wire, back probe it and check for power while the quad is in park, or any gear not reverse. If there is power, good. Now check to see if that same wire has power while in reverse. If not, good. Use that as ground on the relay, coil side. And follow what is posted above.
Lets us know if this works for you.

If the flash on the camera didn't come on, you'd see exactly how much more light i have in reverse. It's equivalent to both headlights on.
BTW, it's just a tractor light i got from Fleet&Farm for $8 or so

great job...

i also did a reverse, but i simply used a microswitch, made up a bracket to hold the switch. and used the rod attached to the gear shifter to trigger the microswitch.

Simple, effective... and CHEAP lol

Did you use the microswitch to energize a relay or does the microswitch go direct to the reverse light?
thanks

Thanks Todd. I have backup lights attached to a switch that I don't like. I use it the same way you do for plowing. Rest assured I will take this info and do some wiring on my days off. Thanks again.

no relay involved...

simply a pulled wire with a inline fuse... to the microswitch, then microswitch to the light...

the microswitch handles AC voltage, so it should simply handle a 12v DC voltage.

Where do you have your license plate? I think the license plate mount (i use mine) is right below the tail light.

Unless i could just build a drop of like 2" for the license plate, and mount the light to the license plate mount
