Grizzly 80 youth model engine seized

2007 Grizzly 80 with approx 20 hours total run time. Never been apart...oil changed twice...never ran hard....engine seized while at idle.

Screw from carb butterfly found its way into the cylinder head and bent both valves before lodging into the head, as seen in the photo at the 5 o'clock position.

I'm a bit "gruffed" at whoever assembled the carb at the factory. Luckily, I have a co-worker who is a small engine wizard and had this apart in about 15 minutes. New valves are on order. Updates to follow...

I`d be on the phone to Yamaha and at least get the parts covered.Go for some labor for your buddy a case of beer at least.did it hurt the piston?

Piston and lower seems to be ok. The two valves are under $40 shipped, but I'll have to square up with Greg the Magician for the labor and knowledge. It's worth $100 to me. Does that sound like enough?

If he can get it back together in 45 minutes, then he made $100/hr, that should be good! Besides, he may enjoy the mechanical victory and might feel guilty taking that much. But 100 bucks seems very good!
Glad the resolution is near. Great pics too!
Good luck!

Not the first time I've seen this happen with the butterfly screws, first on a Yamy. One of the first things I do to ANY engine I have is remove the 2 screws holding the butterflies on and red locktite them. Should never happen in the first place but......

UPDATE! Baby Grizzly lives! Two new valves and it's good as new again. It took my Wizard about an hour to install new valves and reassemble everything. I gave him $150 and feel good about it.

I sure hate to fix a bike that shouldn't be broken. I guess I'm lucky it wasn't worse.

Thats shitty luck. Id still get on the horn to Yami, maybe they can throw in some riding gear for the little one or something. Thats BS and should never happen.

The next time u will here from me will be through my lawyer.LOL
