Yamaha's oil filter for the Grizzly is now made in Thailand instead of Japan and let me tell you they aren't even close in quality. Totally different filter design that's night and day and no its not an improvement. Much less filter area now. I don't know if Yamaha decided this or if it was Denso the manufacturer. There has been rumors on the web stating Yamaha is using the Japan version on the assembly line for street bikes and quads and only offering the Thailand version as a replacement part over the counter and of course they raised the price.

Old part number made in Japan 5GH-13440-20
New part number made in Thailand 5GH-13440-50

Cant buy the old part number anymore. Really disappointed Yamaha would go this route especially on a crucial item. There has to be a better choice than Thailand made junk. The search begins.

I have some pictures to post but once again its a pain in the a$$ to post a picture on this site. No matter how much I shrink it down it stillsays its too large and I'm well under the limit

I use K&N or Mobile1 filters from the Auto parts stores, little more money but I like them better than the OE.

Good to know for the people that use OE, sure they will appreciate the info:deal:

I've been using the Tusk filters from Rocky Mtn ATV, no issues.

I have 2 of the Japan ones left, that I bought 2 years ago. Definitely a good thing to know, because I often buy this stuff ahead if I happen to be ordering something else and have free shipping. I just hate to buy from the dealer, I like the sales group, but the parts department leaves allot to be desired. Hopefully others will chime in about what other good substitutes there are out there.

Kawasaki did the same thing, the 16097-0004 filter is a Japan made one, now the new number is 16097-0008 and has CHINA on the side. I believe the filter is comparable to the 5gh-13440-20-00 Yamaha filter.

Correct. I work at a shop that deals Kawasaki, so before I would use the 16097-0004 filters on my Grizzly since I got those filters at cost. Not anymore, especially since my cost for the new Chinese filter is now close to a good quality Wix or Bosch filter.

The Denso filter from Filter Kawasaki P/N is 16097-0003. Don't know if they will transition into the lower quality Thailand filters or not but the one I bought 3 weeks ago at my local dealer is still Japan sourced.
Be aware, that filter does not have a bypass valve.

I use K&N, for the fact of the welded nut on the end, makes removal much easier. Plus its a quality filter.

Yes the Purolator oil filters are excellent high quality filters. I just wish Wal Mart Canada sold them. Here they only sell Fram. A couple months ago they dropped Fram and sold Purolator......unfortunately this did not last. Now Purolator is gone again and they are back to Fram.
I would NOT put Fram on my lawnmower as its a very low quality filter.

Is that pl number the grizz number

I Just changed my oil last week, will have to look @ the part number on the filter, and see what one I got

What frightened me from using the Fram filter is the "will fit" type spec. they seem to use. I looked up my Victory Cross Country motorcycle and my Yamaha Grizzly and Kawasaki Teryx and Fram specifies the SAME filter for all. When you set the Polaris filter beside the Yamaha filter they are NOT the same - just the threads and base plate match.

I use a WIX filter.

Is this really an issue?

I mean has there been a problem as a result of using the new Yamaha filter?

Almost all aftermarket filters are made in China anyway, so is it such a problem that the new filter is made in Thailand?

I've got one of the new ones in the garage. Haven't looked at it yet, but the dealer did mention that it was smaller/different/something.

#27 ·
I use the Purolator 3". Just changed the oil and filter in my 660 last night as a matter of fact.

Just bought a new factory filter from the dealer for my wolvy. I pointed out to the parts guy it was made in Taiwan now. He was in total shock and never even noticed I was the first person to point that out to him. He offered me a k&n oil filter for the same price as oem so I bought 1 for the grizzly too since it's almost due.

If you check online to see what is quality in oil filters you may be surprised
of what is good and what is junk. Yamaha oil filters are not good oil filters,
and to my surprise I found out that Fram filters were at the dead bottom
on quality. Another surprise was that Purolator filters were ranked #1.
Wix is a good filter, and is the same filter sold by Napa. I have been
using Purolator filter PL 14610 for the past 6 years, and it has been
fantastic. It cost about 6 bucks at Advanced Auto Parts. But, buy what
you want, that makes the world go around.

Purolator PL14610 is only $6.09 at advanceautoparts.com, BUT WAIT!!!... to my fellow grizzly friends, type in "TRT30" in the promocode section and it will drop the price down to $4.26 per filter. Can't beat that! By the way, that code knocks 30% off of ALL their parts. Enjoy.

I use 8 different Wix filters for diff applications. They to are now not all made in USA anymore. More and more Wix are made in Thiland also.

thanks for posting. good to know. I would rather pay 3x as much than put that junk on my investment. I'm pretty big on mobile 1 filters. does anyone know the Mobile 1 part # that fits a 2014 Grizzly 450?
