'09 green Griz 550...........NOISES!!

Finally advanced to the ranks of Grizzly owner with a new '09 Grizz 550 non eps and what a machine she is. This years hunting season now has a lot more area opened up to me. It's been fun zipping around embarrasing the Hondas, popos, and those goofy arctic cats.
Now in doing searches here I have seen posts on various noises like rr brake squeak, exhaust noise, clutch clatter and the such, but mine at 19hrs 220miles has all of that plus.
I've got plenty of experience in auto mechanics so I feel I can wade through a lot of this on my own. I will be shimming the rear pads with squeak tape, refastening plastic panels with expanding rubber well nuts, redo the exhaust clamps and heat shields to quiet that rattle. Then I've got to figure out where that chirping exhaust leak sound is coming from. It sounds like an old VW air cooled motor with origional tweeter pipes.
The last noise has got me somewhat worried and thats because it sounds too much like an upper engine valve train clatter.. unless that too is normal as I don't have much experience with ATVs.
Did I hit the jackpot? Are they all like this? Do I just deal with it? or take this list and the machine into the dealership and see what they say?
Other than noises it's an awsome machine that performs beyond my expectations. tnx GRIZBOB.

Mine had the exhaust squeak for awhile but it went away around 25 hours. I kinda thought it sounded like a head gasket, but it's gone now.
As to the valve train chatter I think that pretty normal, remember there is a lot going on inside that little engine. I think Yamaha recommends checking valve clearance with your breakin fluid change, so go ahaed and check them, they'll prolly be OK. Welcome and have fun with your new Griz.

Thanks Dgshannon, I'm gonna do some tweeks in the garage this weekend to see if I can quiet her down. Just did an oil change and I think a little more saddle time might help on some of the issues.

welcome to GC. a lot of the upper end noise is due to roller rockers and a long timing chain and no insulation between you and the motor. Take a van for a ride with no dog house (engine cover) on they sound like you should be ducking to avoid getting hit by flying parts.

I feel your pain. As a new 450 and 700 owner I find myself always thinking something doesn't sound quite right. The 450 actually sounds much worse to me. I swear that thing is getting ready to throw a rod at any minute. Since it only has about 50 miles, I have to assume thats just how they sound.

Glad to here someone else say that about a grizz 450. mine has sounded like that since new. it has 700 miles now and still sounds like the piston is slapping at high rpm's. everytime I go ride I wonder if this is the last time!

I have always wondered about that? I ignored it on my 700 and after 7500miles its still going strong. Then got a 550 for the wifey and it did it also.
