belt slipping

Hi all,

I new to the forum, and the sport. I picked up a 2000 Grizzly 600 mainly for plowing. it ran out fine and seemed to not slip at all on the test drive. I plowed 2 times with it and also had no issues. The temps were 15-25 degrees. I took it to my cabin over the weekend and have no garage there. It got really cold over night -20 below. I took it off the trailer and it just really would not move. I could drive very slowly. reverse in 2wd was beter that forward in high or low. I called a dealer and they told me to warm it up and pull the drain plug ion the bottom of the belt case. I did that and a thick black substance came out. I was woried that it was oil, but I think it may have been water a little grase and a lot of dust. When I got back to a garage I pulled the drain lug agian and more thisk black fluid came out. I pulled the case and the entire belt housing is coated with the black substance. I don't believe its oil, it has no petrolium smell and cleans up with water. how shoudl I proceed? can I clean the belt and clutch sheaves etc with brake cleaner, replace the belt and see how everything goes? Do I possible have som sorrt of leaky seals into the crank case? How do I remove the belt.

Thanks in advance for any help. I have only had it for 4 days now and I don't want to screw things up.

John, first off Welcome to Grizzly Central, the Brotherhood of all things Grizzly.

Sounds like your trans case is full of mud/water/belt dust. It needs a good cleaning. Clean out all the gunk, scuff the shaves up with a scotch brite pad, and inspect or replace the belt. OE belts seem to be pretty good, most folks stick with them upon replacement.
Here is a good how to on clutch maintenance here Nyroc's ATV info website , it is for a 660 but the principal is the same on the 600. This link has good pics Nyroc's ATV info website, its on a 700 Grizz.

Good Luck, enjoy your stay here, and all that is grizzly.

I appreciate the welcome. I will get some brake cleaner on my way home and clean it up really well. I read throught he post on the link you sent. I may have to read it a few more times for things to sink in. I'm still not 100% sure how to remove the belt. I'm sure it will make more sense when I'm sitting in front of it in the garage. Is it ok to take it for a dry drive down the driveway before putting the cover and fender plastics back on? Should I plan on getting a new cover gasket?

Thanks so much for your help!

John

X2 on the cleaning. The OEM belt is pretty durable and I haven't heard of anybody actually ruining the belt and needing to change it out. Unless you got something in there that damaged it, it probably just needs a good cleaning.

Also, welcome to the site. Everything you wanted to know about your grizzly is here or somebody to tell you about it. Plus a few side conservations. ENJOY THE RIDE!

John, Welcome to the site.
It's fairly easy to do cleaning, just follow the links Jfer posted.
Brake cleaner is good- just give it good cleaning.
And check everything- clutch etc.
I would also check oil for any water in it and change it anyway.

Welcome John. As for the cover gasket, since you will have the cover off anyways, I would go ahead and put a new one on just to be sure the old one wasn't cracked and letting water in. The gasket has probably been on there since 2000 as well so probably a good idea to replace it and it is simple to do.

Update. I have cleaned everything up and put the old belt back on. I test rode it in the driveway. I was able to over ride the brakes without the belt slipping. in the long run, I decided to replace the belt, because I knew I would be mad at myself if I had to tear it appart agian later. IT's all back together now. We are getting some snow, so I will be able to test plow later this evening.

Thanks to everyone. I appreciate the help!

John

Good idea on the belt replacement. It might have gotten oil soaked from all the crap that was in the housing.
Good Luck and welcome to the Brotherhood!!!

I'm sorry jfer, I don't have a clue what that means.

I did plow last night. Everything was fine until I got stuck. I also ran out of gas while I was stuck. Good thing it was only in the drive way. I could walk to a shovel in the garage. When I tried to start it after putting gas in the tank the starter was completely dead. It pull started right up, and later I found the battery bolts were a little loose. The starter works just fine with clean tight terminals. IT's funny I spent way more time plowing than I would have snow throwing. I guess it's a lot more fun......
