Temperature warning light problem on 05/660

My coolant temperature warning light illuminates even when the motor is stone cold. It is an intermittent problem that usually goes away after riding around for a few minutes sometimes immediately after you've selected a gear. The problem began after reset my valve clearances. A job that involves removing the fuel tank and other nearby components to gain access to the rocker covers.
I've run the usual checks. The connection to the temperature sensor seems fine. There seems no trauma to the cable in any way. Everythng else on the dashboard operates correctly indicating a reliable earth and no dashboard trauma.
Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem on my 02 660 after I had my valves adjusted but with the fuel gauge, it reads different levels no matter what is in the tank. I have to get ahold of the Yam shop to find out if their is something I should be looking at. It never gave me a problem until the valves where done, go figure. I'm calling tomarrow if I find anything out I'll post the results.

I'd have to say grab the most accurate way would be to get a multi meter and do OHM tests via a good service manual I'd start with the coolant temp sensor as these can develop internal leaks that can effect the output, might explain why it's intermitent. Not a c;ear cut do this answer but hope it helps.

Yes that's sound advice. As the problem disappears after a little ride around or less I haven't been forced to really explore the situation. I don't want the temp light to be "the boy that cried wolf" type of scenario.

I had a similar problem with my 02 grizzly. The warning light would come on starting the motor and then blink rapidly until the motor got warm. What I had found was the connection to the thermo sender on the top of motor was corroded and slightly loose. It is a spade type connector with a loose fitting plactic cover. I sanded the lug on the thermo sender until it was shiny and then I brushed as best I could with a fine wire brush the spade connector. I took a pair of pliers and crimped the spade connector to make it fit tighter on the spade. I then applied a good amount of Di-electric grease to seal it when I reattached the wire. Have not had a problem since.

This must be a common problem. I just bought an '03 Grizz for the wife and the light come on when you give it gas. But the fan motor seems to be coming on the way it should.
