Depends on how much dust, how hard/sharp/gritty the dust is, how long it has been happening, how often the oil is changed, etc.
Impossible to say, different for every person/machine.

I once had a mechanic tell me dust is like wrapping your piston in sand paper. Every revolution sands a little bit off.

Scoundrel...Just found these pics I took back in Oct.
2016 Kodiak 1100 miles.
Zero dust on the horn no leakage on this machine.

This shows where a shim could be installed. Haven't done it

Foam gasket stock compression.

Foam gasket compressed by possible shim install. I was pushing it forward with my finger.

Thanks for posting those pics!
I thought maybe your foam ring was compressed more without shimming it than mine, but I just went out and looked, and it does not appear to be so.
The mating surface looks nice and wet (it's sticky), so I really doubt anything will get past that ring. And now that I soaked it in No-Toil, nothing will get through it either.
Here are some pics of what mine looks like:

I am only repeating what someone else said that someone at Yamaha said. Take it with a grain of salt.
But my plan is to use No-Toil, because I like it and have been using it since 2005 anyway on all of my machines with foam filters, and it works well for me. I've soaked that front ring in it, and will just leave it alone - won't even wash it when I wash the filter unless the face of the ring gets dirty in which case it might not seal well. I WANT the outer part of the ring to get plugged up with dirt. I don't want air going through that ring.

Well what ever the stock filter oil is (looks like Belray) it did eat the glue from the foam gasket. Don't smear the factory stuff on it!
Now I need a new filter or foam or something.
481 miles
I cleaned it with water and dish soap prior to the picture.

EHS Racing makes a kit. You can replace a little bit of the filter setup or the whole thing, air box and all. K&N or UNI.

That is filter oil. It is in the filter to trap dirt.

The stock filter is over-oiled. It drips down into the bottom of the airbox. Just clean it out.

Summit racing sells K&N air filter for $70.99 part# YA-7016
It's for my 2016 Grizzly. The K&N filter has a plastic-ish feeling gasket built into the end of the filter. No foam needed.
When I get a minute to install it I'll try to post pics.

Just ordered from Amazon. I've never had bad luck with K&N on my Raptor, Tacoma or Camry.
