Gas Tank Gauge hung up? ('04 Big Bear 400)

I filled up my new-to-me 2004 Big Bear 400 last weekend for the first time and the gas gauge on the tank rose to 3/4 tank then stopped. I figured, no big deal, so long as it works on the lower end.

Well, I pulled ~2 gallons out of it (~4 gallon capacity tank) and it never moved off 3/4. Filled her up again, never moved.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to tear into this thing? Or advice, such as, "Don't."

Thanks!

take the gauge out and make sure its free moving and in the right way, if in backwards [if possibile] it can hit the side or back and not move. there really simple. dont know how different they are on yours but on my 660 take the gas tank cover off and there is 4 screws and one plug and it comes out theres a long rod and a float on the end, if u have a volt meter after u have it out take it to the 2 wires and move the float and the resistance should change, just move the rod slowly. i dont know what it should be, my 660 says empty 98% of the time, some time when i have the cover off ill check mine out

Thanks for the reply.

Mine is actually an analog style (no wires). Sounds like I need to figure out how to remove it.

If anyone has instructions on how to remove this gauge from an '04 Bear, I'd appreciate the help!

I hope this shows up, it's part number 20 and 19 in this diagram:

OEM Parts Yamaha BIG BEAR 4WD (YFM400FMC) 2000 FUEL TANK - Cheap Cycle Parts

Anyone know how to get part number 20 off without destroying it?

Part 19 should slide right out allowing me to free up the float (I hope).
