I used 378 studs (actually self tapping sheet metal screws - much cheaper) in total. Each front tire had 88: 2 in each centre tread. Each rear tire had 96: 3 in each "large" centre tread and 1 in each "small" centre tread. Turning the tire backwards was amazing on "ice roads" for traction. Where I live we hav a constant thaw in daytime and freeze ovenight which makes for an Ice road! I could actually drive as fast on pure ice as I could in the summertime on the same road 50khm corners with lots of traction. BTW I only found this out by mistake. For most of the winter I would use them normally though for snow covered roads and trails.

I saw you posted on studding tires. Do you know the best quantity for stock tires? How many per each size lug? How noticable does backwards make?
