Newbie From MN

Hey Guys and Gals, Just figured I'd drop a line to introduce myself! Been a long time fan of Yamaha's in general. After watching my cousin and his dad beat the living snot out of an '87 big bear, and last year was the first time it'd been touched mechanically (no joke) because a front CV joint squeaked, I figured I wanted one bad enough! Picked up a 2016 Grizzly and am loving it. Coming off a suzuki LTR450, I was really leery of the handling of a big 'ol 4x4, but honestly? I like the grizzly better! I did a bunch of searches on this site before ultimately deciding on the machine, and I wanted to join in to the fun once I got one! I look forward to swapping ideas and info with a lot of you!

Welcome to GC. Congrats on the Griz. There has been some complains abou dust getting past the 16's air filter setup. EHS has a fix along with a few members. You might look into that.

Hey, thanks for the heads up on that! Yeah, I'd seen a little bit about that too, so i checked mine this last weekend and all seemed well, but it is very true how poorly designed that airbox is. I'm going to keep an eye on it for the time being, and I think until I have a little bit saved up for goodies on this thing, I'll just do it like I did my suzuki, and put grease around the foam seal lip. Never seemed to have an issue on my quad, but then again, different animal too... Only problems I've had so far, the first one was just dumb. I was working on putting my winch and front Moose bumper, and looked up noticing the "Y" on the "tank badge" was missing... I guess I have a never before seen brand of wheeler called an "Amaha"! lol. Hadn't even ridden the thing yet, so it must have blown off on the highway? Called up the dealer and they're sending me a new one. The other is that I get a lot of sputtering/ backfiring upon letting off the throttle, and when it's cold, it almost never starts and stays running on the first shot. That, and the low end seems underwhelming for a 700... Dealership said to try running 87 octane in it instead of 91, and if that doesn't resolve it to bring it back and they'll play around with it while it's under warranty. Been really happy with it so far though.

The two times to start deal has been a common complaint. Some guys said cycling the key twice before cold starting to prime the fuel pump a little extra has helped. There were some motor issues with some early 16's also. The decompression spring if I remember right. You might make sure yours wasn't affected. The backfiring is due the lean condition from the factory to satisfy emissions requirements. Many report an EHS fuel controller helped with that. Several have also blocked the AIS. My 14 does it as well. The 16 was a brand new beast (in many ways) with new grimlins that always tag along with a new model. Overall, I think the 16+ owners are very satisfied, though.

Helpful tip- when doing maintenance, be sure and check your lower ball joints in the front. This has been a common failure point over time where the pin shears. I haven't heard of any serious injuries yet but the potential is there. I don't know for sure that the 16+ Griz is affected but it's definitely an item to put on your check list.

So what's on the mods list? We love to help spend other people's money! Set ya up a signature so we know what ya got and take a look at other sigs for mod ideas. If ya have a question and are unable to find an answer, post it up. We're happy to help. You'll find that this is one large happy (and sometimes dysfunctional) family.

Welcome from Colorado.
I suggest you run the lowest octane gas available, around here it is 85.
Then look back a few days in the recent threads about C.V.T. mods.
As for the dirt in the filter, use more throttle and stay out front to make your amaha a maha.

Hey, thanks guys! I'm from Burnsville. Thanks for the advice on the ball joints and what not. I'll keep an eye on 'em! As for mods, Nothing too serious. The first two things I did without question was adding on the Moose front brush guard and a Mad dog winch setup. Both have already been used extensively... especially when my buddies wife just backed up right into my wheeler without looking! Lol. Down the road I'm seriously leaning towards a fuel controller, and have had some serious thoughts about the barkers slip on as well. As for right now i'll run the stock tires and rims until they go bald-ish, but I'll probably keep the stock rims for the long run, mainly cuz they're just going to get scarred up! As far as staying out front... not too hard with the pack of Canned Hams I run with;) Plus it helps that nobody else in the group knows the trails when we go up to the cabin!! Glad to be a member of this family!
