Took em out for 1st time!
Hey all-
Well, picked up the griz on Friday. Took it out this weekend, logged about 77 miles on it. What a great machine, a lot of fun. I was in lots of snow, some mud, good steep hill climbs, and of course, got it suck to all hell :) I have a few pics and a few questions, so I hope this is the right forum. Ohh yeah, I have a nice new helmet

Stuck for a few hours. Dug myself out with a tree limb on Sat. That sucked.

Notice I have a shovel and an Axe for this run on Sunday on the back rack!

Sweet looking pics. Might suggest a winch and riding buddy on adventures like that.

No winch yet, probably get it before elk hunting in the fall. For now, I have a ax and a shovel. My riding buddy has a winch.

I was alone, and it was clearly bad judgement. I went up a trail, that wasn't a trail, and sank. I was just on a quick test drive of the machine. All day today, when I rode 60 miles, I was with a riding buddy.
I do have a question: Driving mainly in 4x4 hi, was can I expect in mileage for a tank of gas? I went 60 today, and it was a 1/2. (If I'm reading it right, it had 1 black bar and 1 bar with a E on it ). that puts me at 1/2 tank right?

hey congrats you will have a blast glad you mentioned the helmet . i was out last weekend and met two other riders on a steep hill they pulled over for me and before i got to the last guy he pulled across the trail and dumped the back wheel in a rut rolling the bike over backwards on top of himself we lifted the bike off and all was fine but niether of them with helmets on could have been much worse!!

They look like something out of transformers or something like that. I love the front exoskeleton look.
Under normal driving conditions, how many miles should I expect to go on that 1 tank? I'm thinking around 120? I'm curious because I do ride that much in a day, and I will be 100's of miles from anything. I do plan on getting a rear gas tank container.

Your question is asked many times and to be honest, cannot be answered with much accuracy but I will give you a decent estimate and things to think about that will help you get the answer you need...
Gas mileage is dependant on many variables. Rider weight, trail conditions (snow, mud, sand, hard-pack, flat, mountainous, swamps, dunes, etc.), humidity, air temp, elevation, wheel/tire tread design and weight (stock or aftermarket), 2 wheel drive, 4x4 limited slip, 4x4 fully locked, rider style (timid, average, or aggressive), and added gear (winch, ropes, axe, chain saw, shovel, etc.) all make a difference.
Riding conditions that are average to a rider in Arizona are extremely different that the average riding conditions to a rider in Florida or Louisiana. Subsequently, none of those average riding conditions are considered average to a guy like me living in Alaska. Keeping that in mind, there is really no such thing as average on a forum such as this.
That being said, your Grizzly has a 5.3 gallon tank. Your fuel gauge is a decent guide to your remaining fuel but is probably not very accurate. Here is what I would suggest...
Fill your Grizzly up to the top (all the way up to where it is about to spill out) and then go for a ride. Make sure you set your mileage counter (trip meter) to zero or use your GPG (I would suggest using both). At the end of your ride record your mileage. Go strait to the gas station and fill your Grizzly up to the same level. Record how much fuel you placed back in your fuel tank. Do the math and figure your MPGs. Do this about three times (preferably on different trails and under different conditions) and average your MPG from all three trips. You should be aware of your worst mileage, your best mileage, and your average mileage.
That is the only real way you will get the answers to your question for your particular riding.
I hear a lot of folks say they get about 90 miles per tank before their fuel indicator starts to flash. At that point, you have about 10 - 15 miles worth of fuel remaining assuming flat hard-pack trail conditions. If you were on empty in a mud bog you might only have 1 mile of fuel left if you understand what I mean?
In my case, I can get 60 miles per tank on a good day...but then again, my Grizzly ain't stock
I hope this helps and points you in the right direction for getting a good answer to your question. No one will be able to accurately answer your question unless they ride the same trails, conditions, weights, etc as you do. Keep that in mind when folks provide you their answers on this thread.

Ok, thanks AK. Good advice.
I already had my Trip B set for that tank of gas. I'm at 1/2 a tank and went 60.0 miles exactly. When I go fill it up, I'll see how many gallons I put in. It should give me a good idea of my range on the quad. I'll do it on multiple rides to get a good overall idea. I know it can change drastically.
So 10-15 miles when its flashing <-- good to know.

That is an estimate based on my own experiences and has seemed to be pretty accurate from other folks on here. I would say 10 miles as an average (assuming flat hard pack trail...not bumper deep mud bogging back to the truck). Anything more than that is "gravy"!
I have a kolpin rear rack hard box that will hold 2 x 2.4 gallon fuel cans and still leave me enough room for all my gear. The locking lid holds the cans in place on the trail. I also have a flat kolpin fuel pack (4.5 gallons) but the vent leaks so I only take it along when a really need extra fuel. That gives me a total of 5.3 gallons in the tank, plus I fill up to the top of the tank neck, 4.8 gallons in the fuel cans, and 4.5 gallons in the fuel pack. That should allow me to get down the trail and back a good ways before I need more fuel.

I'm looking at the Kolpin items. Good stuff, I had a catalog sent to my house.
I'm looking for the fuel 1.5 gallon and the water 1.5 gallon setup with the brackets and installation gear for my quad. Outside of eBay and Amazon, any other recommendation on where to buy these at?

Forget the Kolpin Fuel pack. Everybody that has or had them have had leaking problems. If you want a good heavy duty fuel pack look into Rotopak. You will find lots of threads/posts on here with that word. The rotopak is even a member of the GROC. Very heavy duty and does not leak. They have some good mounting hardware and lockable too. Although you may have to mod the Universal plate a little. We are still waiting on an update from Muckboy on how the mounting is going.

Check our site sponsors...I am not sure if they might sell them or not. If they do, maybe they will give you a Grizzly Central discount...it never hurts to ask .
