For those of us that go to Lake City, here is some new information regarding the traveling of ATV/UTV's in town. I just got back from Lake City, 22 June 2017. I made a point of stopping at the Hinsdale County Sherriff's Office. It was confirmed that you can now ride from Lake City south to Lake Cristobal, and return (legally), providing you have a Colorado OHV sticker, insurance and a current drivers license. You do not need a license plate! However, the limit is to the Lake Cristobal turn-off and not further (Hwy 149). You still cannot go towards Slumgullion pass or Cannibal Plateau. This is great news for those who would like to do the entire Alpine loop. Apparently they did some coordination/discussion with the Colorado State Patrol and we are now legal to ride on Hwy 149 from the Lake City to the turn off at Lake Cristobal. It sure is nice to be able to, now, drive into town for gas, food etc. and then continue the loop.
Hats off to the Sherriff's Office/ Colo. Sate Patrol and the town of Lake City for approving and getting this done.
