Gaining the freshman 15 in college is a right of passage. Gaining the freshman 15 when you're past 30 is not. Neither is growing man boobs (aka "moobs") or losing sight of your toes. But take heart beer belly men, the following list will help you tone your torso where it counts.
Eat large breakfasts: Eating a big meal early in the day keeps your metabolism in gear. Large meals at night only end up as fat.
Eat more meals: Spreading out your meals into five or six small ones (maybe every 3 hours) increases your metabolism to help burn off more fat.
Try cardiovascular exercise: If you have time for a workout regimen, try jogging, bicycling, or swimming. Treadmills and stationary bicycles work great. If you don't have time, try parking farther away from work and walking, take the stairs instead of the elevators, or riding your bike to work.
Do sit-ups: Sit-ups, also known by the manlier term abdominal crunches, are an easy way to tone your stomach. Plus, you can do them anywhere.
Drink more: Drinking water can help fight hunger pains. try to drink first thing in the morning and before bed. Avoid sugary drinks, fizzy drinks and, if possible, coffee (substitute with green tea). You can have some fruit drinks on the sly though.
Weight train: You don't have to pump it up like the Governator to get rid of moobs or bellies. Think about alternating chest exercises (such as bench-pressing) with push-ups.
Eat less: There are literally a million diets to choose from. Do some research, talk to your doctor and find the one that best fits you.
Eat more good fats: Good fat seems like an oxymoron, but it's not. There are essential fatty acids (such as omega-3s) that your body needs but can't produce it's own. Healthy food options to attain these include nuts, salmon, chicken, turkey, and canola oil.
Increase your testosterone: Adding foods with high levels of zinc to your diet, such as oysters, red meat, pork chops and beans, can increase your testosterone levels, which may help shrink your moobs. But DON'T do steroids.
Sit: No. This is not a joke. Try tensing your stomach muscles and drawing your navel into your spine when at your desk. See how long you can hold it in every day.
A final note for all you beer lovers: While alcohol does have calories, some studies suggest it also reduces stress and, when consumed in moderation, the odds of heart disease.
