This is most likely a case of one machine working really well....a special pick of the breed. It happens in everything mechanical, especially engines. Sometimes you just get one that works way better than it should. In almost all the cases that I have known of this, the engine was driven hard from day one.
You may put all kinds of mods and money into your '16, and still not match that special '12.
I'll give you a couple examples below to explain what I mean.
I've had a couple V6 Chevy Z24's. My first one was by far the best working one....and I mean by far. And I used cheap oil, cheap plugs, wires, air filters, etc...nothing special. All that and over 300,000 kms.
My second Z24 had performance intake, full exhaust, platinum plugs, 12mm wires, etc...., and only 120,000kms... and it wouldn't hold a candle to my first one. No where near the power.
I also had a 1997 Sportsman 500. Got it as dealer demo. By far the best operating and most powerful Polaris 500 I ever ridden. It would 70 mph and wheel at will. My 660 Grizzly I have now would not come close to it.
