Grizzly or Kodiak?

I have been looking at getting a new four wheeler and i was just wondering what's the difference between the 700 Grizzly and the 700 Kodiak?

I have a 2016 Grizzly and a 2017 Kodiak. The Kodiak has a lower (thinner)seat and the handle bars seem closer. My wife much prefers the ergonomics of the Kodiak, I prefer the Grizzly. The clutching and suspension on the Grizzly is sportier, the clutch engages at a higher RPM, the Kodiak is smoother easier to control at very low speeds.


The Grizzly comes with 26 inch tires, the Kodiak 25. The Grizzly also has 2 additional storage compartments, a locking front differential and LED lighting.

I have both (2018) Biggest difference is the Grizz is about 2"wider due to longer suspension arms, maybe sits 1" taller. Seat is thinner and feels narrower and the handlebars are a little lower.
There is a rear storage on the Grizz below the taillight.
Clutching is different, but you can easily change that.

The Grizz has 4 wheel disc brakes where the Kodiak has front disc with a single sealed drum brake in the rear.

Otherwise the rest is all the same, I like them both and could recommend either.

Get the one you like feel of for size, mainly width and height of frame and body and seat height to pegs. Everything from clutching, tires, wheel width (stance) and even handlebar position can be fine-tuned to your liking, regardless of which one you get. I would recommend get a ride on both if possible before deciding, Slightly smaller package and lower seat hight with the kodiak which is neither good or bad but makes them feal completely different this Pic shows it up.

My kodiaks have EPS without diff lock. I think the LE or SE model has diff lock. Only been a time or two that I wished I had diff lock. It can be added for $350.00 with forum sponsor Oleblue22 kit. 501 Parts.com Yamaha 4wd System Parts and Repair
I love the sealed rear brake. just the right amount of braking for trail riding and near zero maintenance. I've replace the front pads 3 times on each machine.
I change the weights in mine to 20's, left the 30's in my Queens machine. Hers wheelies better.

As of 2018 only the base model kept the lever operated non lock 4wd. All others Kodiak 700 are push button 4wd / lock feature.

Exactly, that's why I said EPS and higher Kodiak's all have diff-lock anyway, assuming the OP is looking at 2018+ new ones.

As far as the brakes go, I feel that the Grizzly has more stopping power, but the Kodiak has a more consistent feel because its sealed and stuff cant get in there.

Another thing that is nice about the Kodiak is there is more room on the left handlebar to mount accessories because the rear brake design. On the Grizzly its an all in one hydraulic reservoir thing and takes up space where on the Kodiak its a cable there.

I find the wet brake fantastic for trail riding. No fade no mush after mudding.
Found the WB more than adequate for riding in the Big Colorado mountains last fall.
The only place that really powerful brakes are need is on black top, which I avoid.

Something can be done if someone wanted. Is to gather up a set of calipers, disc, backer plates, left hand reservoir brake lever and brake line. Then install it on the Kodi. They have the same knuckles as that Griz. Will bolt right on. Don't connect the left lever to the foot brake cable.
Keep the wet brake operated only by the foot pedal.

Yep, misprint, probably carried over from the 2017 and older data sheet.

Here is where they say right in the description for the non-SE but with EPS model it has diff-lock.
