There won't be an 850 as long as the Grizzly keeps selling.

Look around, nobody is sinking R&D money into ATV's right now. It's all going into the sxs segment.

Can Am Outlander's and Renegade have been mostly unchanged since 2012.

Polaris XP is mostly unchanged since 2008.

Kawasaki Brute Force is unchanged since 2012.

Suzuki King Quad got an overhaul in 2018.

Honda have been the same for a long time.

You can't even count all the new sxs that have come out since 2012.

I still stand by my opinion that the 847 in the X4/X2 was never designed with the intent of going into the Grizzly so we shouldn't expect to see it there.

Every sport/utility ATV out there that is a twin either has a v-twin layout or a longitudinal layout. What this gets you is an engine that is no more than one cylinder (+ CVT) wide between a rider's legs. I read somewhere that the 847 is only an inch or two wider than the Grizzly 700 engine, but I don't think Yamaha could afford to go any wider. Heck, I feel even my 450 is borderline too wide at the Ultramatic cover at times.

For the sake of all you power hungry AND reliability minded guys out there, I wish Yammie had designed the 847 with an ATV layout in mind. But they didn't. Someone should shoehorn one in though and prove me wrong, I'd love that...

The 850 is a dedicated design for SxS's. It requires a transfer case for 4wd. The Grizz would have to be completely re-engineered.

Agree we will never see that 850 in a ATV, the design is not compatible.

The question is should they do it, I dont know anymore, even Polaris stopped making the Scrambler 1000. If I sit back and really ask myself if they made bigger twin Grizzly would I want it. 99% of the time the answer is no...
  • More Expensive
  • Parts break easier
  • Heavier
  • Larger
  • less agile
  • harder to work on because of the space required for the larger engine and layout
  • overheating problems
  • ...

When out riding, do I ever feel like it doesnt have enough power, nope not really, so I would want to keep the handling, agility and reliability that my Grizz has.

I have heard rumors that when it comes time to update the Sportsman that Polaris will probably drop the 1000 from all of the ATV segment.
Plus the 1000's run quite abit hotter than their 850 counterparts.

Talking to local dealers, the SxS units are outselling the traditional ATV 10:1 or sometimes 20:1. SxS are the hot item, to be honest I have been thinking about it, my wife has a hard time handling an ATV where for her riding passenger would probably be more fun.
Those of us who like motorcycles and also going way off grid in the boonies breaking our own trails and so on will still prefer an ATV, but were the minority these days.

Yamaha has put the 850 in the Griz chassis but had problems with the cooling, so we know they are trying to come out with a twin for the Griz but have not nailed it just yet, offering the same engine in different platforms is how they get the most out of that engine, I can't see them custom building a twin to just fit the Griz chassis it will have to be offered in other platforms, so that would mean updating other chassis.

I'm still waiting for an improvement in power enough to justify the cost of a new Grizz. I guess you really don't "need" more power than say a 350cc but it is a blast to ride my buddies Outy 1000 , just not as fun to fix it though.

Yep.. pricing is getting up there now for a Griz, you could get a twin in another brand for what you pay for a Griz now, if a twin finds its way into the Griz we would pay dearly for it here in Canada, pricing has gone up over 2 grand for what I paid for my 16 Griz and nothing really has changed to 2018, back to the 686 and a new pod in 19 but everything is the same except color scheme and tire rim combo's, but pricing still has gone up over 2 plus grand, if you have to pay more costumers want more new upgraded options like a new twin motor, not the same old same old repainted and stickered then promote it like you just reinvented the wheel.

My opinion about it is that I'm fine with it and do not expect it to happen in the near future.

My 17 is light, nimble, and reliable by comparison to any larger displacement offering. And lacks nothing needed for giving the trails a hard beating.

Where'd you hear that? I've heard a few people say that, none of them were true lol. Lots of people like to sound like they have inside info when they don't.

I was at my dealership late last summer and just happened to get a chance to talk to their Rep that was there talking to their mech that day, after putting some questions to him about a twin for the Griz that was his response, so i'm almost sure he would no more about inside info then You or me.
