Moving on...

I picked up my 2020 750 Suzuki King Quad today. Very impressed with the fit and finish. The first thing I noticed when riding was how much smoother and quieter the engine is. It came with some very nice cast wheels, but I swapped them out with the STI wheels and 26 inch Bear Claw HTR's I took off the Grizzly. Putting the Suzuki cast wheels on the wife's Rancher.

4 engine failures in less than 4000 combined miles on my 2 machines was too much for me. (3 on the Griz and 1 on the Kodiak) The Grizzly is gone and the Kodiak is for sale. I hope to soon be 708 Yamaha free.

That's a very nice looking machine. Sorry to hear about the need to part ways with the Griz and Kodi. I certainly can't blame you. New Kings are dirt cheap around here right now too. Keep us posted as you get some miles on it.


On a side note, I took my 708 Wolverine to the dealer a couple of months ago for "disappearing" oil. I too have the extended warranty and Yamaha said my issue was a result of carbon build up and they recommended I run a few tanks of ethanol free gas with Fuel Med RX added. Since using the fuel treatment, my oil consumption has been reduced dramatically. I just changed the oil today so we'll see if the fresh change and Fuel Med continues on the path to improvement. I was burning about 5 oz per 100 miles but never smoked. I've only lost about 3 oz in the last 250 miles since using the Fuel Med RX. I still have 2 1/2 year left on my warranty so I'll be monitoring in closely with hopes of a real resolution.

Being i own a 708 if I have any of the problems that aht_six has it may be the end of my 708 as well. Praise God I have had none of these issues. If that time comes I will have to make a choice but I dont see any problems with the old /new 686cc engine either as I had a 09 Raptor 700 before my Grizzly and that was a very solid machine. On the same token those Suzuki's are well built too. I have a 01 King quad 300 that I bought used, beat, and abused and then has been through hell & back with our own two teenagers (They actually got it stuck in the mud so bad the 3500lb winch would not pull it out and I had to use my F150 to get it out) and it still runs pretty good other than needing a new battery and the left front axle shaft as the CV is about to fall off.

I keep reading about this engine being an oil consumer. Let’s face it, sometimes the OEM doesn’t have the fix. They just can’t see past their corporate noses. Sometimes aftermarket parts will help remedy the issue. I’m talkin about a different piston and ring made of different materials and design.

congradulations. did you tell me they never did get yours fixed. I am getting ready to trade my 16 in. I think they may have it fixed but in the back of my mind I wonder if the smoking will occur six months down the road. enjoy your new ride.

I've been following these smoking 708's since the first reports of it came out. I'm not disappointed in Yamaha for releasing the design; those sort of things happen. But what has disappointed me is their follow-through with it. I believe had they decided to fully replace the 686 with it in 2016, they would have stuck with it and really done some root cause analysis to figure out the problem. But since they kept the 686 in the Viking, and then released the 847 twin a couple years later, it became an easy decision to drop the 708 since the 686 was still in active production and didn't have a problem with root cause not yet defined.

You know a company hasn't defined root cause when all they do is throw replacement parts at it and hope it fixes it. Some owners got their oil burning from piston rings that had gunked up. Some were told it was the cylinder. Some was from dust getting by the air filter. I swear I read a couple other reasons too, valve guides maybe? But all that points to, IMO, is that Yamaha admitted their was a problem, but since in the big picture they only built them for 3 model years and knowing not every single one had problems, that eventually the problem would go away and for less $$ by simply replacing parts and phasing out the 708, vs launching a full-on investigation for root cause and implementing a true fix.

If I owned a 708 that smoked or consumed oil, I would do one of 2 things:
1) sell it or trade it in like @aht_six did
2) but if married to the machine or decided it is still worth rebuilding, I'd rebuild the top end but NOT through Yamaha. Reason being is because we know Yamaha just throws the same parts at it. But I'd give it to a trusted engine builder. Let them inspect and measure the cylinder. Then go over all the other parts replaceable by aftermarket components, and inspect all the ones that aren't. People are able to build engines from scratch that don't consume this much oil, and they do it by following proven principles. No reason this can't be done part by part on a 708 rebuild.

Yamaha fixed it twice out of warranty. But apparently they don't really know what the problem is. It was smoking worse than ever before when I traded it off.

Took the new KingQuad out for a short ride yesterday, 26 miles. I was taking it easy, not supposed to use more than half throttle for the first 10 hours. I'm very pleased so far. The engine is smooth, I think the ride and handling is at least comparable to the Grizzly. Two more things I really like; no excessive engine heat on my legs, and no deceleration popping and backfiring.

That's how I do it.
Every engine, and I mean every single one of them that I know that has been broken in hard has always been more reliable, performed way better and got better gas mileage doing it. This list includes my father's rides from years ago before I was even born, as he's the one that showed me.

thanks for the reply. i bought a new 19 grizz se saturday. i took out the extended warranty so for the next 54 months this is yamahas baby.
