grizzly irs 350 vs 450

ok folks.. so its been a while!!! hi to everyone that is still around here!

so i used to have a 700... moved to a sxs... will probably eventually pick up a 450 for my atv needs once i start missing handlebars(i already do).

but the current situation that brings me here is that my dad has a 2006 450. stellar machine. he also has a beartracker, and while it has been great to us, we would like to replace it with a 4x4 machine. its mostly used by guests to our cabin and as a backup. so small and lightweight is key for us. we found a used one that we are looking at friday. im curious... what are the differences between the 350irs and the 450.. im seeing a lot of people say that its the same just a smaller engine, but i know that to be false. from what i gather, no low range, yes dif lock, no liquid cooling. otherwise pretty similar? or exactly the same?

the 350s/450s/400s are very uncommon on craigslist. first one ive seen of any of those machines for the past 3 months of watching that is listed for less than 3k.

anything to look out for on the 350s?

anyone in PA looking for a beartracker? haha.

Welcome back. If that 350 IRS was well cared for, it'll be a huge upgrade from the Bear Tracker. It'll be able to do everything a 450 can cause it actually has diff-lock, just not with quite as much hp. The lack of liquid cooling can be a benefit on a machine that isn't used often.... One less thing to have to check and can't be accidentally damaged cause of low coolant.

350 still has Ultramatic so you can shim it if you need more bottom end from lack of dedicated Low gear.

Oh and that IRS frame can accept a homemade receiver hitch, which we already know you know how to make. Haha.

haha. yep. im actually in the process of making one for his 450 as we speak. need to get to the scrap metal yard and pick up supplies! dont think this one will be getting a hitch other than the factory location. without low range i doubt we will be doing much towing with it. that said, i do love fabricating and upgrading!

the ultramatic is key actually. if i had to pick one thing i miss from the 700, it would be the engine braking. nothing worse than having to ride the brakes down every hill, and every time you hit the gas you get a little skid when the belt re-engages but the engine isnt rev'd yet..

wont be needing too much power. mostly just putting around our property. need to keep the top speed as they recently opened the gravel roads to atvs and we cruise along at speed pretty often. it will definitely keep up with the "tractor" aka our 1991 honda fourtrax 300. which is currently what i hop on when i need something more nimble than the rzr.

cvt is not an option. as in, its mandatory!

so after months of watching craigslist, now another grizzly/kodiak popped up. an 06 kodiak 400 with 153 miles. he is asking 3k. the 2009 350 is 2700 with 1500 miles. so now we need to make a decision. the 400 does not have low or a diff lock and is obviously older. but its hard to turn down those miles. its basically brand new.

Have a look at Facebook marketplace. I just search for a Yamaha Grizzly 450 in my area (WI,MN,IA,IL) there is at least 100 of them within 20-150 miles.

thanks for the idea. i actually hadnt searched the marketplace. but i did check it out and the prices seem to all be the same. nothing with nearly as low miles. crazy how these machines have held their value. testament to yamaha's reliability i suppose.

I feel your pain . I recently picked up this 350 for my son to ride. I had to search for quite awhile to find one, would find one and then it would get sold before I could get a chance to look at it. watched craigslist and facebook marketplace from the first of the year until july before I found this one . $2500 with 4k on it miles kinda high and it needed front pads and bushings for the steering shaft but in all pretty solid machine.

Its been a great machine!!! My son (11 yrs old) has no problems operating it as it is the first 4 wheeler he has ridden. Had him hill climbing, mud bogging and trail riding at Bloody Skillet and Whiskey Springs atv trails before they closed for the season and he gains more confidence with every ride. He always said to me when I tell him to use 4WD "should I use diff lock?" and I would say no, so I decided to show him one situation that he would use the diff lock for . one wheel on the corner of the rock and the other floating in the air. My 600 would never do that would just spin the other tire once it is in the air(see pic below I could have driven all the way over that rock!)

One thing I did notice is that it doesn't seem the engine braking is not as effective as it is on my 98 600 but maybe because it is half the cubes ??? I'm no expert on these machines but I will say even though it doesn't "seem" to work as well he has no problem descending hills even though it also doesn't have low range either. It glides over obstacles with ease compared to my swingarm 600.Top speed seems to be around 40 to 45 mph.

so we picked up the 350. actually only had 1100 miles on it, and i talked him down to 2500. machine is super clean and super well maintained. only downside is a decent size crack on the right side near your knee, and a pin hole in the seat. time to look into a plastic welder and ill also rivit a pice of metal on the back. and ill have to look into how to fix the seat. seems like the machine will fit our needs. same exact size as the 450. odd not having low range or park.

Years ago i used a plastic welding compound, like an epoxy that melted the plastic pieces together. There may still be something like that available, it worked well.
There are also vinyl repair kits out there too.

Congrats on the new ride !!!! I'm sure it won't disappoint even without some of the options you mentioned. I leave mine in low and with it idling it will set still and if it is off it will only roll forward about a foot and then stop almost like it is in park.



I "stitched" the corner of my fender/mud flap by drilling some small holes on each side and using stainless tie wire hold it all together so far it has held up I haven't lost that corner yet.

thanks for the info. ive had plenty of shift machines, so im no stranger to the parking brake. its just an odd sensation to now have a machine that is halfway between my trx300fw which is a full on utility shifter, 4wd all the time, air cooled, and the grizzly 450/700, which were both luxury machines with all the bells and whistles.

our crack is much higher than that, in the colored plastics. im hoping between the riveted backing, and some plastic welding, it will both be strong and unnoticable.

Out of curiosity I booked mark this a few years back. Thought I might need it someday how-to-weld plastic

Didn't catch what year your 350 is. A quick search finds 2011 entire front fender assembly around a 100 bucks.

i can see it growing old though. downsides are, its a polaris, and im waiting for the issues to arise. its definitely a pita to haul around. less nimble for the tighter trails when im just trying to get somewhere. not a hop in hop out thing as much as a quad. doing trail cleanup i used to be able to hop off, trim some branches and have my gf slide forward and follow me for a little. and quick hop back on. now that's a process, unbuckle put in park get tool, etc etc. much less connected to the woods. 90% of the time i take the windshield off cause im trying to maximize airflow. ENGINE BRAKING. or lack there of. you need to brake withyour left foot so you can keep blipping the throttle in order to keep the engine braking going... the whine of the belt as its about to brake free from the cvt as im going down a hill is something that has become my most hated experience with it. im hoping a fresh belt will improve it a bit, but im not holding my breath.
