Skinny rear tire experiment

Decided to castrat my Grizz for my own research.

I "borrowed" my buddy's unused stock 25x8" Dunlap tires on rims without his knowledge. Installed them infront and switch my large 26x11" wide rears Growlers for my shinny 9" wides normaly front tires. This drops about 52 lbs of rubberized rotating mass...

So here results. An odd looking wimpy Grizzly..

Did you ride it for a day to feel how the tires pulled?

Fast Green Convertible "06" 660 on 26" BH OG's with Stock Wheels.
COOP45 Primary, 1.5 mm shim, -1.5 mm belt, Purple Secondary Spring,
21 gram weights, weight covers reduced to 29 mm diameter and a 2 mm Cut Cam Plate.
2 heat range hotter plug, Warn Winch, Passenger Foot Rests, Rock Deflectors, Heated Grips and Hand Mitts,
Grab Strap, Cooling System Up-Grade and multiple position mirrors.
8040 miles, 812 hours on 1-1-15

Sure did! Did a 40 mile threw all kinds of terrains, from slow speed rough technical, steep loose hills, high speed logging roads etc.....

I was amazed with the 9" wide Growlers! Especially in all the steep hills where I expected the narrow foot print to give way. Not at all
I would be very confident running a 9" Growler at all four corners. Not once did I feel I was lacking anything compared to my normal fat 11" wide Growlers. I was really surprised by the entire experience.

I'll bet you stayed nice and clean too with those skinny tires and those big flares. Stayed in 2WD too I assume?

With 52 lbs less weight was there any notable difference in Acceleration or high speed cornering?

I know in the Rhino world people have gone to 9 wides all the way around and been happy with the results. My 550 has 9s in the front and 10s in the back and I definitely wouldnt want any wider due to the extra weight. Heres a couple of pics with them on 12x7 itp deltas:

Have you noticed with 12" wide tires the entire foot print is not on the ground most of the time?
I like the wide tires going fast and in soft stuff. I think toooo many people put toooo much weight/influence on the weight of the tires for performance.
Look at this to see what touches the ground, and lie in snow I like more tire pulling.

this 700 is wearing 10" wide around and got along fine in Colorado and Utah just fine so to each their own and yes you can save a few bucks on smaller tires.

Their was certainly a gain in streight line performance and acceleration. The bike seemed to power / Rev up quickler, witch was fun as hell!

But that was the only positive to having those ultra light weight stock Dunlops... Everything else suffered horribly! The bike's handling, and ride quality was gone because of tiny tire diameter and super soft 2 ply designe. The front end hit harder on every bump, rock, stump etc.... Witch was felt directly to my handles bars. Almost got the steering ripped out of my hands a dozen time. The bike no longer felt settled and balance and could dart in either direction at any moment. The even at 8 psi the stock front tires made my bike handling dangerously unpredictable. Things only got worse when I started to do my normal high speed logging road driving. At every corner the front tires would just fold over dig down, the steering would get hanked out of your hands and a roll over was always an imminent reality... ...


Basically long story short, stock front tires made my bike exhausting, scary, and dangerous...... Reinstall my 9" Growlers on the front end as soon as I got home before anything bad happened. I will never run that set up again.

I would have loved to try my 9" Growlers at all four corners. I'm sure that set up would have been wicked!

Until a couple or three years ago, the stock dunflop tires had a 23.5" actual diameter and a 74" roll-out, not the 25" diameter as stated on the sidewall.
Also when the grizz is indicating 26 m.p.h. wearing the 23.5" tires it is actually going 20 m.p.h.

You wouldn't think a 10.25" difference in length/distance of bike travel for every axle rotation would be that noticeable, that is until you have the chance to ride two different tires back to back on the same bike.
That's why I think it is the drag from the longer circumference, not the tire weight that is so noticeable.
I can ride my 660 with, or without a case of drinks on the front rack and not feel a difference on the trail, that is until I stop. :)

Disagree, tire weight also effects performance. I could tell I shed 50+ lbs of rotating mass. My 9" wide Growlers and 11" are both close true 26" size. I believe the skinnies mite be 3/8" under 26" at the most....
