07 700 Tapping/Clicking

Between a new baby and house over the last year, my poor 07 700 has sat in the shop for about 6 months. When I parked the machine it ran totally fine and now it makes a loud metal tapping noise that gets quicker as RPM's increase and match RPM's when they decrease. I have tried letting it run for 10 minutes both idling and reving the piss out of it with no change. I have started it 5-6 times over the last couple weeks and two of those times the machine would try to turn over, but it stops as if there is too much pressure for the machine to continue turning over. Release starter button and push it again and it'll crank and fire like normal.

Battery is new this year and on a tender. It does not make the clicking noise or throw any codes when it fails to crank/turn over.

No smoke out exhaust, except when it's nearing redline when I mash the throttle which I think is normal for sitting for so long.

Sounds to me like it's coming from the bottom end so I removed the clutch cover and it's definitely not clutch noise. Something in the motor.

Could it just be bad gas?
Oil level is fine, but could it degrade and cause the noise?
Guy at work says maybe a stuck valve/lifter from sitting?
Mice chew a wire somewhere?

If the valve lash hasn't been checked lately I would check that even if it's not your problem it don't hurt to check it for regular maintenance.

The valves have never been checked (6,000kms) and I am usually pretty good for maintenance. But, there have been no signs of poor performance so I haven't bothered.

The only thing I did since I parked the machine (when it was running fine) was clean the K&N air filter. Is there a connector or something near the air box I could have knocked loose?

It's just odd how it was totally fine when being parked...

Played with the Grizzly a bit and have yet to solve the issue.

-new oil and filter
-cleaned spark plug (black = rich?)
-adjusted valves
-drained gas and replaced with 91 and seafoam to clean gunk

Decided to say screw it and took her for a rip with the following results:

-lacking power to the point where holding full throttle only gets me up to 75 kph (normal is 105 kph)

-idle is not smooth as it should be.

-looking down the muffler it was red hot inside. Haven't noticed this before.

Now the really odd part. If I back off on the throttle and hold it about 75% the machine will surge forwards intermittently and momentarily regain it's normal power and the tapping noise is nearly gone allowing me to get up to 87 kph. It'll do this constantly for as long as I hold the throttle at that point. Return to 100% throttle and it'll go back to smooth riding, but lacking power and back down at 75 kph top speed.

Also, when checking valves I noticed it's impossible to get both TDC marks to align. If the "I" mark is aligned with the line in the inspection hole, the mark on the cam sprocket is off by 1/2". Line up the cam sprocket mark with the mark on the head and the "I" mark in the inspection hole is way off.

Do I have a timing issue? If so, should I be looking at the Dynatek ignition, timing chain, or other?
