I have a 2000 Yamaha 600 Grizzly 4x4 and it will not start. When I hit the starter button the motor will turn over for about 4 seconds and then the red oil temp. light comes on. I have replaced the battery (good at 12.8 volts) starter relay, new diode circuit breaker, I have checked continunity on rear brake switch, starter current cut off relay and the ground is tight . Does anyone
have any idea's that might work? Let me know, thanks Tim and my email address is ([email protected])

You say the starter turns for about 4 seconds and stops when you engage the start button. Do you get the same result when you short the two large contacts across the starter relay, or does the starter continue to run?

I should have added more. If the starter behaves the same when you short across the starter relay contacts, then the problem is likely to be the starter itself, or something w/in the engine restricting the starter. If the starter seems to function normally when you short the starter relay, then the problem is upstream of the relay.

I would try a new spark plug first, and then ether to know if you have a spark problem.
I'm guessing you have fresh gas in the tank :)

What happens after the light comes on? Does the starter stop working or ??

Fuel Fire Air 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’ve had issues on these older 600s and 660s, a few 700s where the kill switch corrodes or wires break inside the switch leaving the bike dead. Even seen it give intermittent dying issues. Rule out a few things before you start swapping parts.

What triggered the issue? Tune up? Wild ride? Sitting all winter? Rats nest?

Good luck! Lots of great members on here to help!

Your sparkplug new or somewhat low use? She’s definitely not flooded.. and when did it start to happen?? Wish I could hear the 4seconds - but what ya describe >>> could be a foul plug.

might be the bandex gear if it just stops.but thats why i was saying we need more detail please.
Thanks, I have a new battery (12.8 volts), new starter relay, neutral switch and diode current breaker. I have checked the currency on the rear brake switch, starter current circuit breaker. I took my shop battery and checked the fan motor, and it works, What about the bandex gear? The neutral switch shows green and the quad will turn over for around 3 or 4 seconds and then stops and the red oil temp. light comes on. Any ideas will help, thanks Tim.

I've been gone a few days and have forgot what you're working on, a signature would be nice.
We gave you the the most likely solution a few posts back 2 weeks ago, we don't think you have an electrical problem.

our bikes are not really reliant on a battery or electrical.there is a tiny bit but not much.mostly just for spark.but once its going it will run without the battery.unlike a newer bike.i guess i am saying its more mechanical?>

@Fluteman123 I understand that the starter will turn over the engine for 3-4 seconds then stop without starting. Turning the key off then on then trying to start again give the same results. Or how do you start the process over again?

Have you tried to bypass the solenoid by shorting out the terminals?

These machines have a "starter cutoff relay" #12. I'm thinking it could be your problem. You can test it with a volt/ohm meter.
You should find and download a factory service manual.

Yes I have, I have also used my shop motorcycle battery and hocked it up to the starter directly and the motor turns over fine. Can you install the starter relay wrong? I could not find the mark for the positive post and just installed it the same way the old one was installed. I have the original Yamaha service manual and it say there is a mark on the starter relay for the positive side? Do you have any other idea's as I have checked the currency for the rear brake switch and the starter current cut off relay and they are fine. Let me know if you have anything, thanks Tim.
