2003 Grizzly speed limiter and dim lights?

1331 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  bryanlaprad
hey guys!

I just recently traded a plow for an 03 grizzly that needs some love...but, once i fix it it will be perfect for the house. Im having an issue with the quad in neutral or in any gear, the speedo says its doing 11 mph while at a stop...naturally in reverse the speed limiter kicks in and wont allow it to move...ive also noticed the lights are dim when this is happening...ive tried replacing the relay under the seat by the battery, as it seemed when you pushed down on it, the issue went away...so i figured the relay was faulty. new relay...same issue...any hints guys? greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a fault in the wiring if physical movement changes things, I have watched many mechanics wiggle wires for solutions.

There are some decent mechanical folks on this forum that will likely chime in.
Awhile back the user garef had a problem like this and ended up his battery was bad. Check all the connections to the battery and starter and charge the battery. If that doesn't work a popular suggestion on the other thread was to unplug the speedo sensor. Don't ask me where it is just what was said. See if it zeros when you pull the sensor. If it goes back up when you put it in you need a new sensor. If not then maybe you managed to reset the pod? Spitballing here but hey, worth a shot, right? Good luck!
Hey...bryanlaprad... Welcome to GC from Wisconsin.
First...
Charge the battery overnight. Clean and tighten all connections and wires from the battery to the starter and to the frame.
Hey bryanlaprad welcome to GC from Tn. Sounds like it could be a bad ground so x2 on battery charge and connection issues...good luck.
Thanks for the responses guys. The battery is brand new. I will double check the connections and see if that fixes it. Now that you guys mention the battery, if the thing is acting up and I sjut it off, it will not restart by the starter....it acts as if there is no juice. I meant to add that in my original post, but was afraid the boss was spying on me not actually working at work...lol
Maybe your new battery is bad??
Besides clean and checking the wiring, charging your battery, get the battery load tested.

You should test the stator as described in the service manual.

Well, i think i finally fixed it....after a major freak out which was 100% unnecessary, jumping the relay out, a dead battery, and a 12 pack it turned out the new relay had the fuses installed half assed.....:frown2: removed the fuses and installed them properly inside the block, charged the battery and POOMF. fixed...lol thanks for you help guys. next thing i will need to do is replace the front axles and get a new bumper to mount a winch i bought for the snow plow..

Glad to hear everything's coming together for you.

Bit of advice though. Do not mount a winch to a bumper. It will not work out well for you. In most cases the bumper gets bent and deformed. I have seen them completely ripped off before.

^^^ Mid mounted push-bar is better than a front mount IMO.

What does this have anything to do with mounting a winch to the rack?
thanks for the input guys. any recommendations on front bumper? i saw that bad ass one nyrider had (i think that was his username?) but the fabricator stopped making replacement bumpers. i definitely need a full replacement as mine is bent like a pretzel lol
