So the wife and I went shopping today and she wants a Kodiak in Yamaha Blue, which is cool but it means were looking at a 2019 model with the 686 engine. Does anyone know if the new 686 is the same motor used in the 2015 Grizz?

The 2019 model has lower gearing in the transmission. That's about all I know for comparison purposes.

I guess a lot is unknown right now but the 'new' 686cc engine lists TBI (throttle body injection) on the Yamaha website which is an older generation fuel injection system. The 708cc engine indicates SFI (sequential fuel injection) which was just before DI or direct injection. Having TBI as apposed to SFI shouldn't detur anyone from purchasing one but it seems to be a strong indication that it's the older engine to me.

Same ol tried and true motor that made the grizz great . A bigger bore twin would not make the the low end grunt of a one lunger . Yamaha knows what they are doing
The 708cc used from 2016-2018 is also a single cyl engine in the 700 class size, but is DOHC 4V where the 686cc is a SOHC 4V (honestly shouldnt matter much) but my concern is that maybe there is something else to this 686 rebirth. I wish a Yamaha engineer would just come out and release the thoughts or reason behind the change. Before the 686 was the 660 which was also a good engine, I am not doubting the engine will be good, but at the same time concerned because if you remember the first couple of years they have released a new engine there always seems to be issues.

One thing to note is that the old 686 and new 686 are both Yamaha made. The 708 was a Subaru engine. From what I have seen an heard Yamaha bought the Subaru small engine division hence the 708 but it was not cost effective which is why they are going back. This was from what I have heard at the dealers and from the little bits of research I have seen online. Still not sure if the 2 686 engines are the same but if I were a betting man I would think for the most part they are. Maybe a newer set of electronics or TBI system. No specs have been released on the new one yet to compare to the old.

Yup it sure would be nice if they gave a reason for the change . I think it's a cost thing & Yamaha isn't going to speak up on that if it was something major like reliability or something like that they might give a reason but , if that's the case it will surface sooner or later . I bought a 708 , so far so good researching as much as I could before hand . There is another thread here with an e-mail someone got from Yamaha saying it's a Yamaha motor built and designed by Yamaha yet the suburau , figi, it's not a Yamaha motor bull will go on & on . My two cents says it's a money thing or was easier to get the 686 to pass the emissions laws . I just bought mine a month ago & would have went to a 19 instead of a 18 but I didn't want to wait . Like you said a few cc's is nothing really & to be honest I'd rather have a SOHC then a DOHC , just less parts spinning around up there . I'm sure the two motors are just fine we all know the 686 is tried & true & if it's geared lower in the trans then that's only a plus , look at all of us messing with shims & clutch kits & sheaves to gear down . The grizz is still the grizz and we love em . Grizzly Centralwill be all over anything major so let's not sweat it for now & RIDE ! Everything today is produced lean no getting away from that but it's an easy fix . Looking forward to the reviews on the 19's & I bet they keep getting better & better

I'm betting the "new" 686 is the same motor. Otherwise why is it not a 690, 699, 701, 737, etc.?

And the 686 continues in production while the 708 does not for one very corporate reason: $$$
Money relating to refining the bigger engine for stricter emissions standards, money relating to production costs, money relating to materials cost, and any or all of the these reasons.

It's a Grizzly "700" and it either suits you, or a competitive brand does. Not like 22CCs is making it more or less competitive with it's competition. In reality it really doesn't have any "700" competition, so Yamaha is going to do what they want.

Lets get this straight, nowhere am I complaining about 22cc difference or that I want a bigger engine. More so I am wondering if the "new" 686 is the same physically as the 686 we ran in the 2015 Grizz.

Just as I wouldn't have wanted to buy a 708 in 2016 as it seems like every time I buy something "new and redesigned" I wind up wishing I would have waited a year to get the manufacturing bugs worked out.

Plus the 19' gained 9 pounds. Have a 17' love it, but hate the popping when you let off the gas, here the 19' doesn't. Yes I plugged the AIS.

Hey dezz, got any info on how Yamaha geared it down ? Like the was it the internal gearing or sheaves - clutching etc.etc. just wondering if ya knew thanks man
I have no idea of the details, other than what was released on the Yamaha website, which basically states 6% lower gearing in the transmission.

Now I can speculate that it's in the transmission gears themselves, by simply going off how the lower gearing is stated (as 6% lower transmission gearing)
When you change up clutching, your not really changing gear ratios. While your effectively lowering the ratio of the clutching, it's not really a "gear" ratio lowering so to speak.

But again. This is speculation.

I was going to wait until the 2017's came out because I was nervous about buying a first year new design. I had a blue 2017 on order, the Yamaha blue is my favorite color. Before the 2017 arrived, my dealer offered me a deal I couldn't refuse on a leftover red 2016. I should have waited....

My wife has a blue 2017 Kodiak. She much prefers the lower handle bars and smoother clutch engagement on her Kodiak to my Grizzly.

There has been some talk of the new 2019 Griz with the 686 on Dirt Trax. AJ is doing some "Shop Talk" live stuff now. He gets into some Honda vs. Yamaha stuff and there's talk of building up a 14 or 15 around 49:42. See around the 15:00, 36:25, 47:50 marks for some general Griz talk. I think there's some other stuff in there as well. It was this Shop Talk that he alluded that Yamaha switched back to the 686 for reliability reasons (around 50:23). Take that for what it's worth but I'd bet those guys are more "in the know" with Yamaha than any of us.

I wouldn't think that there were reliability issues with the 708 because of the statements that the 686 is more reliable. Yamaha stated at a press launch that the 686 engine was more reliable, smoother and eliminated the off throttle popping. They went smaller with the engine so it's has to be more refined and durable to make an argument when a lot of guys were sure the 850 was going in the next gen grizzly.

I think the reason they even went with the Fuji engine was cost driven and now cost is driving this next engine choice. I like my 2018 Grizzly and I don't think it's a bad engine. It's more then powerful for what I need and I hope I don't experience any issues and until then, I'm not letting it bother me.
