my 2005 bruin had bent valves. i replaced them. the clearance was perfect, the timing was perfect, and the piston was facing the right way. i got it to run but not very well. it died often. after driving for about 50 feet for the 4th time i drove it the same thing happened and i thing my new valves are screwed now too. an they were lapped also.

It seems you replaced the result of another problem.
Is the engine in time now?

That was my first thought, but if the valves fully close when the piston comes up because the cam is in time, how does the piston get to the valves?
It could be the crank but you didn't report any noise.

Do you think the timing chain could be skipping? The tensioner goes all the way in easily. It's the original chain.

Sounds like it, I'd ask last check. Shouldn't be bending valves like that, sounds like the tensioner needs replaced too
