As you know, whatever you use cannot leave any residue. I use a green scotchbrite pad to scuff it a little following brake cleaner.

I use rubbing alcohol from the local drug store. It’s cheaper than brake cleaner and leaves Zero residue. It costs about $3-4 per quart here in Canada.

Brake cleaner and I don’t scuff the surfaces anymore. Didn’t notice any difference between scuffing and not scuffing. So for me it was just removing material for no reason.
