This seems to point to bad battery connections or a bad battery

when you jump it off and then hit the brake the engine light will come on. Please help
Are you saying the engine is running? OR with the key off the engine light comes on when hitting the brake?

Which brake front or back or both?

If you DON'T hit the brake, but leave it in Park and hit the starter button, does it still turn off?
If so, I agree with reogem - the battery or connections aren't allowing more than the tiny amount of juice needed to run the display, and when you ask it for more, it falls on its face.

If it starts up OK as long as you don't touch the brake, maybe a brake light switch wire is grounding out?
