Are the valves adjusted properly?

Because there is a laundry list of problems that can cause your issue. Get a service manual then look through the trouble shooting section.

Combustion takes 3 things.
  • Compression (valve adjustment, compression test)
  • Spark (verify spark, new plug, gap the plug)
  • Fuel / air mix.
Because your machine is carbureted, this is my 1st suspicion. Clean it. New gas. Proper adjustment. Make sure nothing is plugged. And it can change suddenly if there is any debris.

But it’s hard to trouble shoot by internet.

Backfiring probably means you are running rich, check that the air filter is clean or wasn't over oiled.(If your filter is that type) unless the loud pops were not from the exhaust area then I would check that your timing hasn't slipped. Make sure the carb is clean and adjusted properly so it is getting enough air with the fuel if all above looks good.
