I just got my 600 running. Now it is blowing the carb off the intake. It does not backfire it's almost like it just slips off. It doesn't have very good throttle response and seems to take a while to rev up. It will pop out the exhaust a little when first exhilarating then goes away when you give it a little more throttle. I have the needle under the diaphragm set to the second clip up. Thanks for any help!

New boot and valves were just done. After I posted this I found a big hole in the muffler probably 3 inches in diameter on the top near the mount. Could this be part of it? Is it worth getting an aftermarket muffler or just try to patch this one?

Yes the muffler can cause this, believe it or not.
Oem mufflers are crazy expensive. I did a full wrap repair on my 1998 600 muffler. But I also own a welder and had access to a metal roller.

Did they make a 600 that didn't do this? Just kidding. I have owned and seen numerous 600s that do this. I'm in the salvage business and don't have a lot of good to say about the 600. In my opinion its one of the worst bikes Yamaha ever put out. They are also fire prone, I've seen more of them that have caught fire than all other bikes I've had come in combined. The advice DEEZ and others gave is gave is good but also make sure it doesn't have the knock off China carb on it. They are junk and I personally have hardly ever seen them run right on anything but youth bikes. Usually when a bike coughs it is not getting enough fuel so raising the needle can also help it.
