Installed Elka Shocks - waste of money?

12174 Views 31 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Grizzcrazy
Okay, I finally installed my Elka shocks I’ve had for over a month now that deer season has ended and have time to actually ride without disturbing anyone else. I have Stage 4 shocks for the front and rear, so as you know that’s been a little over $2k just sitting in a box on a set of spare tires. So I’ve been reminded about how much they were everytime I walked in my garage, thinking to myself how much of a waste that has been and if I had that money in any other stock right now, how much more I would have. I kept saying, there is no way these things are going to make the ride that much better on my new 2016 Grizzly SE, the shocks on this one have felt better than any other new 4wheeler I’ve ever had, so these have to be a waste of money and I’m going to be more pissed when I ride it and can’t tell a damn difference.
So needless to say I went into it with a very bad negative attitude kicking myself for buying them.
After I finished installing all four, I didn’t have much time to test ride them due to getting ready for a super bowl party. I couldn’t take it off far, so just had enough time to ride around the block and down a powerline about a mile close to my house which has some good bumps and hills to do some small jumps.
I lowered the bike and backed it out of my garage, down the paved street.....
WOW!! I was surprised the first 20 feet, what a difference it made, I thought I was crazy, no way this ATV was gliding over the payment down my street, I’m seriously smilling ear to ear before I even get on the powerline where I can open it up away from houses. This one Quick ride winded up being at least 30 mins of me going around and around this little area just playing like a kid on my 4wheeler. I’m 40 have had some back issues in the past, it goes and comes, nothing the past few month, these make everything so smooth and fun. I really can’t say enough about them or even put it in words correctly. That was Sunday of course, super bowl. I have had to work since but I can’t wait until this weekend to to take it to Camp and really ride all day. I will reply on how else that ride goes which will have a lot more to base it off of. But as of now, just riding on pavement - excellent it’s like you are gliding, bumpy powerline- excellent, you can’t really feel the bumps, the atv just smoothly takes you over them, Small hills for small airborne jumps- excellent so much fun, feels better than a sport bike like a 450R, than a big utility atv.
Extremely happy with these as of now!

Great feedback and the more you ride them, the more you will want to go riding. I smile riding on Stage 1 Elkas, so it's hard to tell what it would be like on Stage 4, slobber, drool, or other things left unmentioned.
You're post just moved Elkas back to the top of OKBears list....he dreams about them, ha.
Enjoy and be safe

From what I have been told, nothing less than Stage 3...after I recalibrated the Stage 1's. The seals on Stage 3's are more suitable for trail riding vs the Stage 1's to be used around the farm, although you can upgrade Stage 1 seals on a rebuild:wink2:
After 3-4 days or 30-40 hours of riding they get squeaky and need to be hosed off, ha.
More?
PA should be awake in a couple of hours and I'm sure he can share additional added benefits of riding a Layz-boy down the trail.
Cheers and be safe, watch out for those 179mph JAGS, HA.

I don't know how much longer I can read posts like these and not pull the trigger! I've got the money saved up just scared to spend that much on shocks.

Well...they are on my to-do list. A bunch of us drop $1000.00 or more for wheels and tires, so why not $1300 or so for shocks? Depending on the overtime situation this spring and summer, maybe sooner rather than later!!

In retrospect, probably not real soon! Wife is going on a trip with our niece, harping about paying off credit cards, wants to re-model bathroom, etc, etc. I'm guessing Mainehunters overtime is going to domestic tranquility this year, LOL!! Last year it bought stator cover and stator, windshield, front box, rear box, a lot of bullets, a rifle scope, a wireless game cam, Bear Claws and ITP's etc. etc!!!! Ha, Ha!!!

I can't even count the number of times I have filled out the custom order parameters on the Elka website. I leave the browser tab open and look at it for a few days and then I talk myself out of spending the money. I was going to pull the trigger last Spring but after renting a Wolverine, I bought one for our family instead. Now the plush ride of that machine has me wanting Elkas for the Griz even more since I enjoy riding the quad over the SXS personally. I have to say I do love hearing about how much you guys all enjoy the upgrade though. Someday...

@PA. GRIZZLY, you are doing well to be so discreet, LOL!! Question, a little off topic. How well have you're wheel bearings held up with the tire/wheel/spacer combo you have?
And I haven't said a word....>:)
Yeah what’s up with that! :grin2:

Hahaha. You know as well as I do that resolutions are meant to be broken. But I’ll enjoy the calm between storms. lol. Elka’s are in my future. Just have other fish to fry right now. But rest assured that you all will hear all about it when I get them!
