I have a 02 big bear 400. It will run if I pull start it but it won't start by the button. Also when I turn the key on instead of nuetral light coming on I get the red oil temp light. When I do have it running by pulling it the key will turn it off. I thought the battery but I have it hooked up to a battery charger still nothing, and I've put a differnt push button set up on it and still didn't work and still no nuetral light just oil temp. ?????

What is the voltage of the battery? If the battery is bad, a charger will not fix it.
Anything less than 12.5 volts is bad on a freshly charged battery. Best bet is to have it load tested.

When you touch the starter button, what actually happens?

X2 on what Dezz said , the pull start requires very little power to fire the engine but the starter takes a lot. It sounds like a weak battery or bad connection to me. The starter could be a problem if it's drawing too many amps but not likely.
