Hi Guys

So im new to GC and completely new to the Quad World.
I recentrly (last week) bought a 01 Grizzly 600 that is not in running condition. I know from the previous owner that the starter solenoid is not working and it needs a new battery. Yesterday I did some new engine oil, brake fluid, universal key switch, cleaned the carb and a new battery. I am waiting delivery for some filters and a new solenoid.

After I hooked up the new battery, I tried to switch the bike on to see if any power is delivered and to which areas. I turned the key and nothing happened, not even a spark or light. it was as if their is no battery in at all.

I have to mention also that the wiring looks a bit dodgy. I will post some pictures shortly about the wiring

Is it normal to not having any power at all even if the solenoid is not working. Ive attached a picture of the bike before I bought it

Any help will be great thanks.

Old bikes are known to have wire chaffing, which burns out fuses.
Start at the battery and check wire connections with a bug-light. No power, check the wire fuse.
Also, a Factory Service Manual can be had for about 10 bucks u.s.d. on tradebits.com

With a new battery installed, measure the voltage out of the battery without anything connected to it, to make sure that it is putting out voltage, with a good charged battery installed you should have voltage to your quad, when you press starter button/switch, you should have voltage to the solenoid, you will need a Volt ohm meter, you can get a cheap one at Advance Auto, to make these voltage measurements at the battery and at the solenoid. Make sure your meter is set on measuring DC Volts.

So I managed to get the solenoid and this is what I have done so far:

Install solenoid
install new main fuse
battery volt - 12.8 to 13 depending on charge

Status:
Open fuel line
Turn the key to "on"
Green light comes on
Headlights, tailight, speedo dail light all work fine
switch to "run" and hear a relay in the back
press start button - nothing happens

Additional:
If I short the solenoid out, the engine turns for about 2 times and then stops

let me know what you guys think

Thanks - G.

Hook up a car battery to the starter directly with some jumper battery cables and see what happens. If it turns over fine and even starts, then you know you have some more wiring issues. My guess is that the starter is not getting the amps it needs to turn over properly. Could be poor grounds....remove all grounds, sand all contact points to clean bare metal and re-install, and see if this helps. Could also be a bad main battery cable, positive or negative....might look fine from the outside, but internally is corroded or damaged....that is why I suggested a jump. ;)
