New cylinder/piston Install

I have a 2009 Big Bear 400 4wd and had to install a new cylinder. I put the new piston and cylinder onto the motor and noticed the large o-ring from the bottom of the cylinder barrel wasn't installed.
What is the purpose of this o-ring?
Can I omit this?
