Winch question

899 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Skyraider
I finally had a warm day today and thought I would test the Viper Max winch before I ran all the wires where I wanted them. My remote switch and handle bar switch seem to be ok but when I push them all I hear is a clicking sound and the winch does not turn. It is a brand new winch and never been used so I would think the connections are good. . I saw on their site that if I put a battery directly to the winch it should turn and if it does the problem would be the relay switch . I would not think that I would get a bad relay with a brand new winch . Does this sound like it could be the relay ? Thanks for any info you guys may have or if there is something else I could check ..

Just want to make sure... is the winch turned to engage the spool or is it in free-spool mode?

It was in free spool , I did not think about that . I will make sure it is engaged tomorrow and see if that is the problem.
RedRocket , Thank you so much for that tip. I have never installed a winch before and know little about doing it. I was afraid I could not get it done without help when I started doing it. When I went back and looked it was in free spool where I had pulled out some cable so it would have some play if it did work the way I had it wired. I had forgot that I did not have it engaged . I engaged the winch and ever thing works fine . Thank you Sir !

@Skyraider

hehe, no problem and glad to hear it was only that. Hopefully that didn't cost you too much time or frustration... but at least no extra money was needed!

Glad it was something simple.since you mentioned you never installed a winch. I would unspool the winch and wind it back on under pressure. so that when you use it on the trail it will not pinch or wind the cable up on itself wich can damage the new rope/cable

Thanks , I will do that when we get warmer weather here . Starting to warm up to the 40"s but probably be another month or so before we get some nice days again. Yes it was my first winch install , it took me several days looking and then running wires , cutting them and finding connectors . When I thought I was finished I found the bracket I made for the relay set it too hight up and the top panel would not go on . I had to go back and alter the bracket some but I did not mind after finding out the thing would work when I put the winch in gear, lol. Thanks again.
