I have been looking at the options for wiring a winch to the hot wire from the ignition . I do not really want to cut or splice into factory wiring if I can help it. I read there is a wiring harness that plugs into the factory wiring that gives you a connection wire for a winch ? It says it is a Yamaha part 5KM-86171-00-00 . Is that what you guys use ? It is a Grizzly 550 , 2013 model. Thanks for any info on this , I have never installed a winch and am totally clueless .

Skyraider.. That wiring splice kit is probably the cleanest and most reliable way to wire in the winch. You can actually wire in two components with that harness. You will also need to gets a couple bullet connectors.

Thank you so much . Not sure what the bullet connectors are but maybe local auto stores will have them.

There is nothing wrong with splicing into a wire as long as you properly seal it up , solder , heat shrink , and/or liquid electrical tape all work great.

I just looked and know what a bullet connector is now. Just did not know what you called them before. What size bullet connector fits the wiring harness ? I bought one and have it installed and am ready to finish up the wiring but not sure what size connector to look for. I had very short wire and had a time getting the plugs off and harness on so hate to take it off again . Thanks

Unless I’m misunderstanding something, bullet connector size is dictated by the size of the wire. It is simply a method of joining two wires together. You should be able to find an assortment at Harbor Freight for cheap or try your local auto parts store.

Personally, I like most of my connections soldered. Especially items that I have no intention of removing anytime soon. A properly soldered connection is worry free. If you are interested and don’t have experience with soldering, check this out...
There’s really not much to it. And with just a little loss of wire, it’s easily reversible. And depending on how the connection was sealed, it can be unsoldered with no loss of wire.
