Check the switch on the left handlebar perch. It's held in with a metal clip. Those can get sticky sometimes and will not extend when you pull the handle.

+1. I had one of these fail once. It was like $20 to replace. You can test it by pulling the connectors off and jumping them with a paper clip or something.

Check the "signal system" fuse. Won't start in gear if tail light fuse is blown. If it blows again you'll need to find the cause.
