Grizzly 550 Engine swap?

Okay so i got a quick question for all the experts out there. What is the difference between the 550 and 700 grizzly engine wise? Besides the obvious displacement. I am wanting to build a stroker motor for my 09 550 and noone seems to sell a big bore kit/ much less a stroker kit. So im wondering how close the 700 is to my bike.. Im trying to figure this out to see which direction i need to go. I can get a 700 engine from a buddy that needs a rebuild, or i can take my fresh young 550 and if the cylinder and crankcase are the same have it built. Thanks for any help... .

As far as I know, the 700 and 550 are the same other than the stroke. Someone on here will probably know for sure.

Okay so i took the advise of the first guy that answered.. i pulled up the 700 and 550. Everything down to the bearings are identical. The only difference is the Cylinder, piston, head and control assembly for the EFI. So since the crankcase is the exact same then i should be able to buy a big bore kit and a new head for a 700. And get a replacement control module and i should be all set.. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I would check with Eric at EHS Racing (a site sponor) to make sure you have all your ducks lined up!:rocker:

Okay imma try to give him a call next week and see what he thinks i should do.. Quick question though.. How do you like the 734? Enough power?. I am a power junkie so i was wanting to get up and over that 800cc range if possible. I guess ill let Eric tell me what my best bet it.. Thanks again for all the replies..

Okay I realize this is an old thread... Are there any updates with this thread?

I've been searching online trying to find a BBK for the 550. Every aftermarket shop (Trinity Racing, Max Power Engines, etc.) I've talked to says that the BBKs for the 700 won't work on the 550. That's with doing throttle body adjustments and installing a programmable Dynatek or VDI unit.

I've read this thread and a couple more on GC and all of them say that a BBK on a 550 could be done.

Does anybody know another shop that I could try?

thanks.

Quote from Max Power:

"We can big bore just about anything, unfortunately there are no pistons available for your model." say what?

I find that funny, since you can custom order a CP for only a few bucks more then a shelfer. Forget what it is, but its not that much more.

#13 ·
Would probably be cheaper to sell your 550 and get a 700.

But if you want more then a 700, id stroke it, and bore it. No diff then boring or stroking a 700.

So im trying to figure this out as well I have a 2011 550 and my dad has a 09 550 that is smoking bad out dealer up here sells a top end rebuild kit for 500 bucks (Canadian money they called loonies shinny gold coins) but im like said guys above me my 550 is great but I haven't snapped an axle yet and im told I cant buy new ones till I do ( ive blown cv joints) I have issue when in deep deep holes it like to bog out almost like its getting no fuel not cutting out just no throttle response I have read it could just be bad electrical connections? but anyways dad and I are dreaming thinking he will get my good solid none smoking 550 I get his used up smoking 550 and rebuild it but question is if im going to rebuild y not build a bigger more power ie (700 piston or bigger and cylinder) but what else all has to be done details.. how do guys like those stroked out 734? can u cam these motors what money reliability and power increases can we get and what kind of bend over touch ur toes prices are on them?

You need a 700 Cylinder, Head, Piston, and Throttle body. You will also need a Bazzaz tuner to make the FI work correctly.

You cannot go over stock bore with a 550 crank because it will be out of balance. But you could still to a high compression piston, porting, and a Cam and have one hell of a ripper with the lighter 550 crank.

Email Tristan Aka Loudtronics. He has built a 700 from a 550 motor. Watch going to big on motor unless you have deep Pockets. Wet clutch is weak point when making big poweŕ

LOVE THEM. TOO LOUD WITH OUT QUIET CORES THOUGH.
STILL HAS A GOOD BARK WITH QUIET CORES, STILL PISSES NEIGHBOURS OFF WHEN I COME IN LATE AT COTTAGE.
HAD ISSUE ORIGINALLY WITH MELTING PLASTIC BUT THEY NOW SUPPLY HEAT SHIELDS WITH THEM AND I WRAPPED MINE WITH HEAT WRAP.

I like it now. Took three years to sort out all the bugs and find good engine builder and a combination that works. Goes over 70 mph with speedo and 28" tires. Haven't GPS'd it but its fast. Walks by 850 xp. Haven't run against any BRP twins.
John at racers Edge built my engine 2nd time. Ist time built bt White Kuckle racing. Nothing but problems from day 1.
Almost like if your building one of these bikes you need a stoick 2nd bike to ride when broken or waiting for parts.
Wouldnt go this big again unless you have deep pockets. The thing that really hold these bikes back is the TB and wet clutch.
Had the wet cluctfh delete worked amazing in term of performance but couldnt get it to last over 150 kms then something would break
Ehs Racing has a good package. Thats the route i would take next time.
Stay to 105mm bore and smaller stroke, keep around 815 cc
Tristan(Loudtronics build good motor as well and has been down the same road as me) between his build and mine we can point you in right direction

I too was wondering if i big bored my 700 could i put my stock cylinder and piston on my buddies 550... correct me if i'm wrong, but it seems like the simple answer is no, unless a lot of other stuff is changed too?
