Yeah, we need pics to help. The oil strainer on my older quad is on top of the oil plug. Maybe you are talking about the oil filter cover?

 

I assuming you had a big ratchet and socket, tried to turn the plug and it wouldn't move, then you put some muscle into it and uh oh! You were turning the plug the wrong way, and as it was already bottomed out or seated, there is no room for the plug to "tighten up" a little more unlike most bolts or nuts.

Before I'd order parts, take it to a machine shop and see if it's fixable with the engine in place. Even if you spend between $200 to $400, it's better than ordering parts taking everything apart and reassembling everything.

Post some pic's, I'd like to see how bad it is...

I don't know what happened, and I did use too much force.

I am not even certain if this "part" is supposed to come off now. The book I have says it does but I am beginning to guess which year bike I have.

I have looked for the VIN number, but can't seem to find it. I have checked the front "drivers side" wheel area but see nothing.

I looked at your pictures and I have good news. You got real lucky and only broke the nut part off. That whole thing with the ribs or metal nubs sticking down comes off as one peice. Use a dull cold cut punch and hammer and hit on the nubs. This should remove thst complete unit.
It what I said does not makes sense, then buy a new oil drain plug and it will all make sense once you see it.

 

Really? So that damn thing might actually come out !!!! I thought for sure I had the one Kodiak with a permanent oil strainer!!!

I think I understand what you mean, but I will probably go down to the Yamaha dealer tomorrow and order the part first -- just to be safe.

I am pretty sure that strainer hasn't been touched in her 12 years!

As said before use a chisel or even a flat screw driver and tap that cap off.

 

just make sure you go left lol right will not remove it ive seen a few broke like that before

 

I'll let it sit wit Pb Blaster while I await the new part.

GO to partzilla dot com and look up your quad. You can find the parts diagrams as well as their cost. You will find them much cheaper than a dealership. I've had great success with them.

 

For a picture of the drain plug, use google images and type in "yamaha grizzly 600 drain plug". The 4th and 11th picture you see (they are ebay images) are the drain plugs.

I say to use grizzly 600 for your search because that is what worked to get a picture of the drain plug. Most Yamaha utility ATV's use the same drain plug. These pictures will make everything make sense.

 

I don't know about the above, not trying to be a jerk or anything, but it sounds like you're maybe not that mechanically inclined? The attached picture kind supports my theory.

Okay, you're upset with me right now but that's okay I probably deserve it - but maybe it's better to spend $50 and take it to a machine shop/Yammie dealer/lady of the night standing on a street corner at 3:00am to get them to remove the broken plug. The last one would for sure be able to get it off and I'm sure it would cost at least $50 (no taxes, cash only) - she might leave some teeth marks though. If you start wackin' it :banana: you might make a mess......by damaging threads or case.

And I'll end with this - you must have really been squeezing hard to bust a nut like that! :lala:

that is TOTALLY fair ribbing. I deserve it! I think I have to hand in my "mechanically inclined" badge till it is earned again.

Am I mechanically inclined? certainly not professionally trained. The last job I did was change the timing belt on my VW... no easy task. BUT---- I'm not known for my gentle touch!!!! (chime in -"thats what she said" guy !)

 

I don't mean this to sound mean or rude but it doesn't sound like you have much mechanical experience so you should really get clarity from your dealer before you proceed.

From what I can see in the picture the entire assembly looks like its cast and not made to be removed. Though its hard to tell from the picture and not knowing the model. In the mean time make sure that no (or no more) debris finds its way into the hole.

 

Dang! Glad you got lucky on that one! Hopefully that comes out easy for you this go around

 

It would be much easier to work on if you stand the machine up on the back rack. Looks almost fused together. Like others said soak blaster or ?? for a couple days.
