Some of you may have been there done that, the spring, washer and screen dumped in to the pan quicker than I could see and I didn't find it till after a short ride with it's first Amsoil oil and wix filter. They sure do put a lot of parts into a plug. I even put it back on and did a mental check list of what should be there based on the manual and darned if the seal hadn't fallen off.

The old oil wasn't bad but dark, I was pleased. The new oil came out of the machine when I dumped it to put the piece back in, just as dark, didn't have a mile on it. I've heard this stuff cleans things up but I didn't expect it to get dirty looking so quick. I even sent it back through a filter before re entering, there were small particles of varnish.

Machine did sound good and ran calmer with the synthetic oil.

a 1998 grizzly 600. It's more like an 1 1/4" plug/cap with the screen, spring and washer fitting in it and a seal around the perimeter of the cap. I've changed oil in a lot of things, I never saw one like that. Screens kind of nice but I don't get it. It seems to protect the cap from sediment sitting in it. I think next time I'm going to set a magnet under the screen to catch any metals. since the cap doesn't incorperate any magnetic abilities, something that cars and trucks have been doing since at least the 1970's.

I'm guessing based on your question they aren't still like that.

On the 600, there is another drain plug into the left engine case half.

It is directly under the oil filter cover, bottom of case, listed as:
90340-14046-00 PLUG, STRAIGHT SCREW
on the CRANKCASE parts drawing.

You can drain the oil there, unless you just want to flush the screen and pickup tube, which is retained by the large head drain plug 4HC-15351-00-00 PLUG, DRAIN on the OIL PUMP parts drawing.

If you drain/flush screen using the large PLUG, DRAIN, it's a good plan to inspect the surface of the lower case surface where the o-ring seats the plug to the case.

Also be sure to note that the oil pickup tube 4WV-13416-00-00 PIPE, OIL 1 (OIL PUMP drawing) is properly repositioned before reinstalling the screen, spring, and large plug.

Hey now that you mention that, i found a odd looking cone-shaped screen in the bottom of my plastic oil pan and was wondering where in the hell could it be from.

So it goes inside the drain !? I've been running my 450 kodiak alot since the oil change, i hope it's not a necessary part, i didnt even find a spring or seal, just this cone-shaped screen filter! o_O

Mine fell out as a unit, screen, spring and yellow plastic washer. The manual shows it, but I can't remember in what section. No index in the manual, if you want to find something you have to re read the whole thing, dumb.
You could be missing more than the screen and not really sure how important the parts are. There is an oil tube above the plug the whole thing maybe holding in place.

Haynes manual:

"99 and later Kodiak models and Grizzly 600 models (mine) have an oil drain plug at the rear of the crankcase as well as an oil strainer screen/drain plug in the bottom center of the crank case"

"Consistant routine oil and filter changes are the single most important maintenance procedure you can perform on a vehicle"

i drain my 600 there. I just crack it loose then turn it out slowly by hand and pull it straight down. it goes back in (looking at the drain plug from oil side up) yellow screen into spring with, spring into plug.

I don't have a 600 but obviously the screen isn't in there to protect the drain plug, the only thing to protect in there would be the oil pick up so make sure it's installed correctly.
X2 to what Kieth20mm says

I can see that now, still it isn't a small screen, a lot could get through. I think the screen on my windows is a tighter weave. I did have slug in the bottom of the plug, probably some metalic. Putting a magnet that will fit in the bottom of the plug should work out nice.

Thank you both for the good explaination.
