Skidplate Install Problems

Hi guys,

Just spent the last hour or so trying to install the Large "Maniax" skidplate.....

see here for a picture.....

http://www.royaldistributing.com/shoppingc...L-2008/191.html

The problem is the pre-drilled holes in the replacement skidplate do not match up with the holes on the Grizzly....The holes in the middle of the main replacement skidplate do not match the holes on the grizz (its the ones that are on an angle that the stock middle skidplate uses)....Not only do the holes not line up, they are not oblong shaped to allow the screws to fasten the flat skidplate to an angled thread.....

Has anyone one else had a similar issue? At first I thought they send the wrong skidplate, but the box confirmed that it was for the grizzly and the other holes seem to match up....I suppose I could simply drill new oblong shaped holes using the stock skidplate as a template but after enlarging the pre-drilled ones (I did not realize they did not line up until I screwed one side in) I thought I would take a step back and see what others have experienced before I turned this new skidplate into swiss cheese.....

I had read that this plastic type skidplate was an excellent replacement but I gotta say the installation is giving me fits.....

thanks for any help.

Regards,

C.

I ordered a set of the PERFEX plates, had the exact same problems you are having, sent them back. Send those back, and get some of the aluminum plates, I was offended by the lack of quality, and lousy fit of the Perfex plates. -------

Thanks for the reply. Called up the vendor who said they had sold several and not had any complaints....well that may well be but it still does not fit.....The vendor then called the manufacturer who said they were not aware of any installation issues. ya big surprise.....but then the vendor called up one of the previous buyers who also confirmed THAT THERE ARE INSTALLATION PROBLEMS (it does not fit period)....well vindication I guess.....I sent the vendor pictures of the stock skidplate and the maniax so they could see the difference....I suspect I will still be out the 150 but here's hoping.....

I am sure it was on this site that someone recommended the skidplate...I will search for the thread....

I'm sorry to hear your having problems with those plastic skids. On a trail ride in the desert I had the displeasure of slaming down on a rock in the back. It almost trashed the rear axel cross member and could have done even more damage. It was then I realized that no plastic was going to give me the type of protection that aluminum could. I paid way to much good money for my grizzly to not spend a reasonable amout on skids. Ricochet Skids are a good price and have given me some peace of mind. At $400 dollars it's a small price to pay -vs- price of repair with out. Good luck to you

Your problem sounds so identical to mine that I would bet money those MANIAX plates are made by the same people who make the Perfex plates, and then market them under a different name. My install problems were EXACTLY the same as yours, --- good luck on getting your money back!!! -----BigD

They are made by the same company. I'm not sure if I recommended them or not. I probably said I liked mine but I did have a little trouble installing them. But he said I was the very first person to order them 1.5 years ago, so I gave him a little slide from a 1st run production stand point. He just sent me an updated plate because I did manage to put a crack in mine. Now mind you, I have beat the crap out of this skid plate before I cracked it. Not much more than a hair line crack and the manufacturer wanted to make things right for me. Sorry I don't have time to install the new one on right now or I would let you know how it fit. He told me the new production runs have an aluminum plate that slips between the frame and the skid plate which aligns it much better. Did yours come with this piece?

Mine did come with the aluminum piece. This piece fits at the rear of the skidplate though, not in the middle where I am having trouble. the vendor where I bought it from has sent the pictures to the manufacturer and is waiting to hear back....I doubt the manufacturer will assume responsibility but I am hopeful the vendor will....

I did look at the yamaha skidplates and the aluminum ones but my concern that with all that coverage, I would be digging out mud from the skidplate with my fingers......

I would not be recommending this skidplate to anyone.....

Mine also came with the aluminum plate, I'm sure they are the same thing. Mine came from Hebco distributing, I think in Quebec.

Ok, figured it was time for an update.....after messing around with the skidplate for awhile, it became clear that it could be made to work with some new hardware. It does not use the same mounting holes that the oem skidplate uses and it did not come with the necessary hardware to allow you to use different mounting points. After a trip to the hardware store, I was able to get it mounted....Sure would have made it easier if the directions had made mention of this and if they had included the requisite hardware....

All was well until mid August when the plate broke, well cracked anyway....Well, no problem, the website says lifetime guarantee....Emailed the contact who assured me that a replacement was on its way....5 or so emails later and two months in time and I finally got the replacement plate. Was a bit of a hassle getting the replacement but it was eventually sent so at least they do honor the claim on the website....

I am not sure what caused the plate to crack but hope it was just a freak incident...certainly do not remember any big bumps. If it happens again on a minor collision, then I will look for something more durable.....

Regards,

Cliff

not sure what you paid for the skid plates and since you are having problems consider the ricochet products....

around 340.00 for the set, they fit perfect. great protection
