Shifting on the fly.

Hi All, Never posted here so this is my first time. My question is simple. Do any of you shift from 2H to 2L (or visa/versa) while still moving? I own a '02 660 and always come to a complete stop before I shift. Is stopping necessary or not? Thanks. Tom

Welcome aboard Tom! :gcrules:

I always stop. I have a 700 and you have to apply the brake in order to shift unless you disable the linkage. I don't know on the 660 but would think you're best to stop.

Welcome to GC. I also stop to shift.

X3 on stopping. You might be risking your transmission. A costly repair for the sake of a few seconds to stop and shift. Not worth the risk imo.

In order to shift the transmission you need to stop and shift. I have tried shifting a few time while moving (don't ask why...) and it doesn't work.

Now shifting into 4wd is different. I never stop to shift into 4wd if I am on the move. As long as your not spinning, your good to shift into 4wd (or vise versa).

X9718 for having to stop before shifting from high to low and back. There is nothing in the drivetrain that allows for the rotational speed differential while shifting in motion. It's not like the foot shift hondas that have a multi-disc clutch to cushion the shifts with their gear on gear transmissions.

Welcome From Colorado.
If you see a problem ahead and need low, stop early and shift. Then once out, stop and shift back to high.
You can raise the pulley ratio to change the low end performance to make high gear more usable in the slow, tough stuff.
